I recently bought a 1907 Savage in 32 auto. The magazine is supposed to hold ten rounds but I can only fit nine in there. I can see the spring binding up/covering itself through the bottom hole when its loading. When I "thumb out" the rounds the last four to three want to stick in there.

Im guessing it needs a good cleaning and/or a new spring. This is the original Savage magazine, not a reproduction. I've compared it to pictures of the originals and reproductions.

Any help on how to disassemble the mag is appreciated

If there is no removable floorplate and there are holes in the side of the magazine you can compress the follower with a dowel then push a pin or nail sideways through the magazine, just below the follower. The pin/nail will hold the spring as you relieve the pressure on the follower. At that point the follower should fall or shake out of the magazine. Note the position of the follower. Recompress the spring, remove the pin/nail and carefully release the spring. To reassemble, just reverse the process.

I know all about the "Ten Shots Quick" but many of those magazines only hold 9 rounds without using a lot of force. Don't worry about it.

And DO NOT disassemble the magazine unless you absolutely have to. The floor plate can be pried up and slipped to the side for removal, but it can't be done without bending the floor plate; the floor plate is not spring steel, so it will bend out of shape if you try to remove it.

Disassembling the magazine like a 1911 magazine doesn't work well because the inspection slots are only on one side so the spring and follower can't be captured the way they can on a 1911.

Clean out the magazine by washing it in a solvent to clean out dirt and crud, use a pencil or dowel to push the follower up and down. Then drain. You can lightly oil the magazine internally by dropping some oil through the slots.
If the magazine was dirty, you might be able to get 10 rounds in with no problem, but don't count on it.

If you want to cuss that magazine release, cuss Browning, who patented the better system in that and about everything else, forcing the designer of the Savage pistol (Searle) to work around the Browning-Colt patents.

I have three mags for mine, and none of them really hold ten. I guess I could force it, but why? They are collectables that I like to shoot, not SD pieces. I don't need 10 in a mag.
