Ran across a Savage 340 in .222. Seems to be in god condition. How do these rifles rate? I have been looking at CZ or looking for a Remington 788 or 700. There is a series of holes alongside the receiver. Is this for scope mounting? All comments appreciated!

BTW price is about $150...

I inherited a Savage 340C in .222 when my father-in-law died about 20 years ago.

The rifle shoots pretty accurately. I have an old Weaver K6 scope (came with the rifle) attached in a side mount.

I've never particularly cared for the gun; it seems "ugly" to me. But it will shoot and certainly should be worth $150.

They shoot pretty well and are reasonably reliable. Trigger pull is usually horrible and AFAIK there is no after-market trigger for them. They take a side mount (the series of holes) because a top mount won't work with the split rear bridge.

I bought one years ago in .30-30. Not the most elegant rifle ever but after all, it's a hunting rifle. Never had a single problem with it and it's actually quite accurate. I see them going in the $225-$250 range.
