Sure, I know I can ream the chamber, but will the magazine take the longer rounds? Will it feed them? I'm thinking no because of the magazine length. The Lott round is as long as a 375 H&H while the Standard 458 is a 30-06 length cartridge. If anybody knows different, please tell me.

WildbirkenstocksanwoolsocksAlaska,

I agree that reaming the chamber isn't enough,

Seems he'd have to change the magazine box to the longer version they use for the 300 UltraMag and modify the stock accordingly but the 116 is a LONG action is it not? What would you say is the major hold up? (besides paying $800 for a Savage) Maybe have to open the ejection port? Modify the bolt stop?

Or....

I could buy three or four CZ 550's and spend the extra on scopes for the price of a Dakota. Problem with the Dakota is I don't think I could feel good about handling such an expensive gun. I'd be afraid to USE it.

I like the Savage for one reason... It comes in stainless.

CZ 550, Hard Chrome, Muzzle Brake, mounts, scope, sling, ammo, dies, mortgage...

All Savage rifles EXCEPT this one are push-feed. They redesigned their bolt for the 458 so it is, indeed, a CRF and not push-feed. The gun I looked at was actually fairly impressive as Savage Rifle's go. I'd have to say it's easilly the best one I've seen except for maybe my custom 358 Winchester model 10.

I know this is old, but what exactly are the differences/benefits of controlled round feed versus push feed?

What I have been told about controlled round feed is that it is desirable in a dangerous game rifle. It can prevent most failure to feed jams, not good in a possible life or death situation. I also herd that controlled round feed rifles will feed and chamber a round with the rifle in just about any position, even upside down.
