I'm sure many of you have the same experience, spending more time reloading magazines at the range than actually shooting. Shooting a semi auto .22 is supposed to be fun, but 10 rounds goes by rather quickly.

Which brings me to my next gripe.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the Savage 64 is the lack of aftermarket options. Namely, no higher capacity magazines. So I decided to make one. Taking one magazine with worn out feed lips, I welded it to the bottom of another magazine with intact feed lips. Using both springs and both followers, a little bit of work with a flat file and a little bit of work with a round file, and some fun with the welder, I successfully made a functional 20 round magazine.

The feed lips on the magazines are pretty soft, and get chewed up after about 300 rounds. They are about useless after 500 rounds. While Savage does replace them if you mail the bad one back, I figured they are cheap enough (about $15 on average) that I could sacrifice one for the betterment of my shooting experience.

Pardon the duct tape.
