Hi all,
I was hoping to get some feed back on the Savage Axis XP rifle series.
I was considering picking one of these up in the 223 caliber but before I did I was hoping to get some insight/feedback on the quality/fit/function of this rifle.
Does anyone own one of these or know anyone who does?(even if it is not the 223 caliber) I see they are on the cheaper side this is why I'm asking, also what make is the scope they supply with it? I'm just looking for something to go " plinking" with and I don't want to drop too much coin on it, but on the other hand I don't want to end up with a total piece of crap that I will regret buying...
Any insight would be great
Thanks
J

My buddy just got one and it shoots great, but the stock is real cheap and junky, kinda feels like a cheap airsoft stock ( it works though). Nice shooting action though.

I got one recently and like it for what it is, as stated the stock is kinda lame but it shoots very well.
The scope that came on mine is a Simmons 3x9 and the mounts are pretty lame it was also installed canted. Once it was leveled up and sited in it does fine.
A very accurate little rifle that I'm glad I purchased but it will go to a friend soon so I will be ordering another.

Mine came with a Bushnell 3-9 scope. Not the best but I re mounted it with some different rings and bases I already had and it works good enough. Not the best looking or feeling rifle IMO but it shoots and works great. Plenty accurate and well worth the money.

I purchased one for my son. It is a good solid entry level rifle and will be just as accurate as many higher priced competitors. There are only 3 places that I can really find any fault with.

Trigger- Definitely do a trigger job. There is lots of info online available for this model.

It is a long action rifle, so bolt travel is the same as a 30-06. Your magazine will have a spacer.

When I say long action, I mean LONG. You need a scope with a long body or a 1pc scope mount base. A Nikon prostaff 3x9 40mm barely long enough to fit on the rings.

Nice rifles, if you can get them where you are there is a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter (TH) xp package which has the accutrigger and a Nikon prostaff for a little bit more money. I went with the Axis and haven't looked back. I too recommend getting a one piece base, otherwise scope needs to be long and have a handsome amount of eye relief.

I have a Savage Axis in .223, wearing a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 scope.

On the plus side, it is very accurate and not at all picky about what you feed it.

The down side is the trigger, the pull is quite heavy. Also, the finish is not exactly world class. Not really unexpected for an entry level rifle.

If I had it to do over again, I would still buy it. IMO, it's a good deal for the price.

My 223 Axis came with a Bushnell 3-9 scope. Had to remove the factory installed scope & tighten the base mount. Will shoot 1/2" groups with Hornady 68gr match handloads. Trigger is very heavy, about 6 lbs, a guess. Good buy for the $$

I've got one in .243.. Has a Bushnell scope that only needed a couple minutes of elevation adjustment for 100 yards, and it's been a tack-driver ever since.

Only issue for me is the trigger and the stock... The trigger is heavy, but manageable. It'll be replaced with a Timney, soon. And the stock is flimsy, and the plate at the bottom of the grip broke... So I'm hoping SOMEONE comes out with a new scope on it.

But overall, it's been one of the best bolt guns I've had, considering how little it costs.

I looked at the Savage...for the price it is a good rifle but for roughly a hundred more I decided on the Mossberg MVP. It has a great trigger made just like the Savage Accu-Trigger but easier to adjust. Use any AR-15 magazine, is a shorter action so it has a shorter bolt throw and is just plain good looking. Mine shoots very well also.

Where did you get the Mossy at such a great price? I spent $250 for my Axis/Edge. All of the Mossburg MVPs that I have seen were just a bit under $600 once you finish paying for tax

I've got an Axis in 223, but I added my own scope. The rifle is very accurate and the action is very smooth. The trigger from the factory was very heavy. I lightened it by swapping out the spring with a much lighter one, took all of 15 minutes. It made the rifle more enjoyable to shoot. The action is long so you will need either a scope rail base or just use a long scope. I just used a long scope and it works fine.

I paid $267 OTD at my local Wally World, and put my own scope on it. Of course, there is no sales tax here which helps a bit. It was the first gun I bought from Wally World, and it will probably be the last, just too much hassle for me.

The Savage triggers are actually very easy to lighten and stone if you know what you're doing.

Instead of a one piece scope base, you can get the Weaver #402 base. It's an extension base that will allow mounting a shorter scope. The base is less than $4 from MidwayUSA. I've also seen them at Dick's in the shooting section for ~$4.99.

I was looking at them for a while back when they were still called the edge. When I held it I hated it. The bolt was rough and the trigger was not very good. I ended up going with a Marlin XL7. But that was a year and a half ago. When Marlin was still Marlin and not Remington. Savage has probably fixed them up since then but if you can find a Stephens 200 they have been getting great reviews.
