What .223 for target shooting?

I will admit I'm an AR junkie but no way would I suggest one for a budget rifle when it comes to accuracy. You can buy a savage (not an axis) .223 for $350 or less new and put a $90 trigger in it and it will shoot lights out. Just buying a nice target trigger for an AR is going to be $250 by itself.

Least expensive recipe for accuracy:
Savage/Stevens bolt gun
Rifle Basix (or Timney or SSS) trigger
The stock of your choice - we're not talking going crazy and buying a mcmillan or something....maybe $100 for something better than the stock one or $250 for a pretty nice one. You get what you pay for though.

Price aside? Forget it...just get a GAP rifle or something. 99.9% of people can't shoot nearly as good as one of their guns anyways.

Or you could just say the heck with it and build a precision AR. Sure it will end up costing you as much as the GAP in the end but it's fun to build. It's like Legos for adults that like guns. I'm making one as we speak and I don't even want to remember the stupid cost of these parts.

so this focuses on the <200 meters, maybe stretch it to 300.

I have no problem shooting tight groups at 500 yards with my Savage 12 LRPV. If the wind isn't real bad a 4" group isn't unusual at all. It's close to being a standard size. I've shot 1" groups at that distance but that's only happened once I think. I had some ammo that was just great. I had other ammo that was marked the same but from a different batch and it wasn't nearly as accurate. And yes I'm using off the shelf ammo. I use Black Hills stuff which is very good IMO.
