Savage Barrel Nut Removal from barrel

Ok - this seems like a simple question but I couldn't find the answer using a google search.

I'm working on rebarreling a Savage Axis. I've already removed the barrel from the action so the nut is broken loose, but as far as actually removing the barrel nut from the barrel - do you retighten towards the breech and slip it off that way or do you keep unscrewing towards the muzzle and slip it down the whole barrel? Thanks!

Thanks! I've got it off now. Going either direction felt a little tight and I didn't want to risk it so I figured I'd ask.
