Axis II or Model 11? which one and why, please.
The model 11 is a short action. I believe all Axis models are long action...if you are purchasing an Axis in what would otherwise be a typical short action chambering the longer bolt throw may be a consideration for you.

The Axis II and model 11 both have the Accu-trigger...i really like this trigger.

I have an Axis in 30-06 and am very pleased with it. I can routinely get less than 2 MOA at 100 yards. This was my first bolt action and i have no regrets. It had a different trigger than the Axis II accutrigger - I upgraded the trigger to a Timney which i am much happier with (the Axis II won’t need this). I upgraded the stock to a Boyd’s (this was a budget rifle that i improved as finances allowed; when i was done i had about the same spend as the Model 11 below).

I also have a model 11 (Trophy Hunter Model) in 22-250. I had a better budget when i bought this, and felt the additional money was well spent. This is a 1 MOA rifle with a number of different loads.

Unlike the Axis, the model 11 bolt is polished, and there is a 3 position safety. The recoil lug is a more traditional design as well. When i upgraded to a Boyd’s stock, it did require purchasing the bottom metal from Savage for the magazine, but it is now has all metal or wood - no plastic (again, i improved as i had the additional cash). With the Axis, i have not found a way to replace the plastic magazine catch. I like the absence of the plastic parts with the upgraded 11, but i have not had any issues with the plastic magazine release on the Axis.

If i were purchasing today, i’d try to stretch for the model 11, but i also think the Axis is a good value for the price. I’m very pleased with the accuracy of both.

Good luck!

It all depends on how many corners your'e OK with Savage cutting. That said, Savage has a well-earned reputation for delivering excellent out-of-box accuracy. Is there anything as, or more important than accuracy when it comes to a rifle? Only the buyer can answer that one.

I own several Savage rifles all of which deliver exceptional value. The price difference between their main line and their entry line is not sufficient for me to chase a few dollars, especially when a bit of time and patience gets me last year's main line for the same price is this year's entry line.

My recommendation is to find the one you want, then shop it hard, online and in-store. Buy it. Enjoy it. :)

I recently bought a Model 11 in 223. Nothing fancy but it's solid and accurate.
If you are looking at a short cartridge case caliber I think that's a good way to go as it's a bit more compact than the Axis version.

If your money is real tight, The AxisII is fine. The Model 11 is a better gun, for reasons others have mentioned. Both will be very accurate for the money invested.

Condor, boyds makes and sells an aluminum mag catch for the savage axis. I believe you can Google "front catch and pillar bedding kit for savage axis". If I remember correctly, it was around $30. I recently replaced a stock, mag catch, trigger guard, polished the trigger and installed an Mcarbo trigger kit on the non accutrigger on a axis for my dad. Turned it into a very nice shooting rifle with an Excellent trigger.

EDIT: it's V3 precision that sells the mag catch, not Boyds

Not enough price difference between the Axis II and the 11 to choose the Axis IMO. The model 11 is a lifetime gun. The Axis could be, but probably not.

I plan to have my Savage rifles a long, long time, and then hand them down to kids and hopefully grandkids. They are all model 10's and 11's. I wouldn't feel good about handing down an Axis. Just my .02. Not saying they can't shoot. They can. But the 11's are a better rifle.

11

Better support, bigger ejection port, more parts available such as the bolt handle, and the recoil lug isn’t in the stock. It is in the barrel.

As posted above the is so little price difference as to make the decision that much easier

I'll add that if I were to ever buy an Axis, it would be the Axis II in the wood stock, only. The wood stock gives the gun some value. Their Axis plastic stocks are embarrassing IMO.

I have 2 model 11’s and a model 10 both have been very good rifles for me,
I would pick the model 11 over the axis

View attachment 773024 I have several Savages: M10s, M11s, M12s, M111s. I even have a M220. They are more easily upgraded in the future.

Axis are fine rifles for the money, no doubt. But with an eye to future upgrades, I would not go Axis; I would go M11 or other.

JMHO,

I bought my son the same model it is a fantastic rifle in fact I my kind of jealous I bought it for him , I may pick on up for myself one day and I was going to mention the model 11 comes with a better scope then the axis

You will like that rifle. Just remember, they shoot better with time so whatever you see at the beginning, it will just get better as you shoot that barrel in.

Man you guys are making want to sell my two axis 223rem reg barrel non accu trigger that shoots half moa and my axis 2 heavy barrel that shoots half moa.

What do you guys think about Cabela's model 12v?

I agree the stocks suck but I purchased a boyds which didn't fit me and noticed no accuracy improvement when the boyds was on the gun. I am debating to either buy a boyds or try and sell the axis 2 for the model 12v or model 11 predator. I already have lots of money in load development put into the gun so ill most likely keep it. At the time I purchased my axis 2 heavy barrel 223rem for under $300 with cheap bushnell scope. I think I was at $300 on the money after I paid tax and sent the rebate in but it could have been cheaper. Do I regret my purchase? Only when I try and shoot with a sitting bipod on the rifle but when I'm using a sitting bipod I'm not going for precision.

Just purchased an 11 and 111 in 270 and 7mm08. CDNN has them for $299 after rebate and comes with bushnell trophy scope. Love the accutrigger. Great rifles for boy and self for KS whitetails.
