Savage hog hunter or Ruger Gunsight Scout?

I'm wanting to get a 308 scout rifle, I saw the savage hog hunter the other day and its got most of the stuff I wanted in a scout rifle, but no detachable magazine. I've since found out that I can convert it to a detachable mag for about $300, but then it costs as much as the ruger gunsight. So my question is for the same money would you rather have the ruger or the savage? I think the savage is going to be more accurate, but the ruger is a nicer gun and comes with all the scope mounts I'd want and it's 10rd mags are half the price of the savages 9rd mags so I think I'd be saving money it the long run, but accuracy usually isn't something you can fix. So what do you guys think?
 
I would go for the Ruger. You can't go wrong witht eh SAvage with its reliablity and accuracy. The Ruger just seems "prettier" with its laminated wooden stock. It also has more accessories such as the detachable magazine and scope rings.
 
I have a gunsite, and its a rather well made gun. No clue about the savage, but the gunsite is worth the money and I love having magazines.
 
All things being equal, you get more value from Ruger GSR. I love my Savages, but the GSR is a great value since you get a mag system and you get a threaded barrel with FH along with BUIS.
 
I really like the hog hunter, I wish savage had just made it with a detachable magazine. I think you guys are right the ruger GSS is the way to go I think if for no other reason then looks alone and 10rd mag availability.
 
The Hog Hunter is a good rifle if you want iron sights, but it makes no sense to buy it and then spend $300 to convert it to detachable magazine. Buy a rifle that comes with detachable mags like the Savage Model 10 Scout.
 
Makster, I would but its rear sight sucks IMO and its not threaded and they are listing for $880 msrp so we are back to the ruger, the only advantage I see the hog hunter having is that I can buy it cheap and build it as I go, but it will cost more then the ruger and never quit be as pretty or as nice
 
I would get the Ruger, without a doubt. I simply cannot make myself by another Savage bolt gun, ever. I know this might be a one in a million thing, but it did happen to me.

I had one of the Savage Scout rifles, and I really liked it! Until the bolt broke around the bolt head retaining pin. If you look, there is really not a lot of metal in the bolt that goes around the bolt head retaining pin, it is weak. When it breaks there, it is difficult for the bolt head to unlock from the barrel. I finally managed to get it unlocked, but it was a chore, and I was lucky. I know that by far, most shooters have never had this problem. But I shoot my firearms alot, and I do not want a firearm that may let me down in the crunch, especially a rifle like a hog, sniper, or whatever type rifle.

Except for the little problem I just listed, I would not worry about it, but I have not had a Savage bolt gun since that occurred. I actually quite like the looks of the hog hunter Savage, and I have no doubt that it is accurate.
 
It would be cheaper to buy the Savage Precision Carbine and add iron sights if you want a detachable mag than to convert the Hog Hunter. Personally I'd just use optics and forget the irons.
 
Go with the savage. I have one in 308 and it is the extremely accurate. Can put bullets through the same hole on paper once sighted in.

Geez, that's a tough one.

On money alone, a standard issue Hog Hunter seems perfect. It's light, has open sights, a weather resistant synthetic stock, etc. It appears to be a good all purpose rifle. I don't think I would bother with a detachable mag for it unless you want to make yourself a semi-custom gun.

The Ruger is appealing due to its adjustable LOP wood stock, rear peep sight, and detachable mags. It weighs about the same as the Hog Hunter and is a tad shorter. A lot shorter if the flash suppressor is removed. Yet, it only comes with rear scope rings. If you scout scope it, you still have to buy a set of rings for the front rail.

I got a GSR only because I had to have it and was willing to part with the money for it. I honestly didn't even know the Hog Hunter existed, but I would have wanted higher mag capacity for it too. No real reason for a larger mag other than having a case of the "wants". :D
 
I've owned a Savage 308 and now I own a RGS and love it. I'm still working on loads and it looks like the Ruger will be plenty accurate.
 
I'd say Savage, but instead of converting to detatchable magainzes just find someone that will add a stripper clip guide.
 
Another vote for the Ruger GSR. After finally getting one, I sold four rifles it replaced, outclassed, and outshot.
