Asked this on the Savage forum, but thought I'd ask here too.

I really like the Savage Scout platform but it seems it's only available in .308. I already have a model 10 in .308, so I'm curious what it would take to convert the Savage Scout to another caliber for a plinker/range gun? Maybe .243? 6.5 Creedmor?

I don't have a Savage Scout but my understanding is the barrel isn't screwed in like typical Savage fashion. Maybe something like an interference fit where barrel and receiver are one. One would think Savage could have had offerings in 308 Win, 7mm-08 Remington, 260 Remington and finally a 243 Win offering but I guess not. Anything is possible with time money and the right machine shop, I just don't know if the change would be worth the money and efforts?

Just My Take....

OP I don't understand your logic. It would be so much easier to rebarrel your model 10 instead of doing it on a scout. The scout has a smooth nut, which would be more difficult to remove the barrel. The Scout barrel has the picatinny rail that touches.

Save youself the headache and rechamber your model 10. All you will need is barrel in caliber of your choice as .243 260 and 6.5CM will use the same bolt face, which is .473. You will need at least a GO gauge to headspace. You can buy it or rent it. You don't need a NO GO gauge as you can use a piece of tape on the GO gauge to create a NO GO gauge. You will also need to use either an action vice and a barrel nut wrench.

It takes under 15 minutes.

Actually, my 10 has a smooth nut too.

And you're right. I didn't really think it through. The Scout has a forward scope mount (which I like) and that's unique to the .308 barrel that comes with it. So if it were rebarreled, you'd lose that forward "scout" mount that makes the whole rifle unique.

I've decided I want a range gun, and it will be a Savage, but I just haven't really decided on which one yet. I have an Accustock sitting in the closet. I might just build something, just for the experience. It would be fun.
