I'm nearing the purchase of a Savage Mark II FSS (stainless version). I want an aperture sight, so I plan to put one on from Tech-Sights.

I'm 90% sure I want to go with this setup for a nice rimfire rifle, but I am open to any suggestions that anyone here has before I put the money down.

I'm looking for a plinking rifle for the range, possibly to take part in an occasional competition, but I'd like to keep the price range about $300. Prefer to keep it stainless if I can.

The Mark II FVT already has peep sights. Listed at $426, however. And it's not stainless. But it would give you the best look I reckon, no extra screws and such. Just another option.

Actually I'm glad you mentioned the Mark II FVT. I was looking at that one too. I notice it has an aperture sight that is rear of the receiver, while the Tech Sights version I'm considering, has the aperture a couple of inches forward.

What's the difference in these two types of peep sights? I read the Tech-Sights aperture is .062 inches, like the M-16A1 rifle, but I can't find the aperture size for the sight that comes standard on the Mark II FVT.

Is one significantly better than the other, or is it just a matter of preference?

The rear peep sight on the FVT is interchangeable. IOW, you can put any sight insert you want in there, so it can be any size you need it to be. The front globe sight is changeable, too. I very nearly got one when I got my Savage a few months ago.

Tec-sights are designed to replicate the aperture sights on a military rifle, like an M1, M14, or M16. The Williams sights on the FVT are target aperture sights. They have more fine adjustments, and like I said, can have any size aperture put on them, and a much wider variety of front sights is designed to work with them.

It is largely a matter of preference, but also application.

Good info about the interchangeable sights, thank you. I will post on what decision I make and how it works at the range.

So I decided to go with the stainless Mk II with the Tech-Sights. It turns out they also have an attachement that takes three different apertures, (for $15 more, so I opted for it). My new rifle will arrive tomorrow, and the sights later this week. I will post a range report as soon as I can.

I picked up a MKII-FVXP Came with a Bushnell 4x32 Scope.

I've gotten Frustrated with my inability to hit the broad side of a barn with open sights.
My eyes aren't what they used to be. LOL

Hopefully I can hit the 10 ring with this setup.

This is what I went with, the FSS (Stainless), with the Tech-Sights. Still haven't had a chance to get to the range yet though. It will happen soon I hope.

The factory FVT is a better iron sight setup for target shooting. Tech Sights are wonderful, on other platforms but is far from ideal mounted so far forward on the MKII. Which may or may not make it better for field use. I like my peeps closer to the eye, especially on a .22LR.

I was a close decision, either this or the FVT, but I think for my purposes, this setup will work just fine.
