Greetings,
I just got a Smiths Tatical GI Muzzle break for .308. I want to put it on my Savage Model 10 but when I do so it does not sit flush with the barrel. There are still threads remaining below the brake. Is this a problem?

Generally, you want the brake to tighten against the shoulder.
If looks like the brake does not have a counterbore to account for the unthreaded portion of the barrel.
You could use a crush washer to tighten the brake against.
The cleaner method would be to have a gunsmith counterbore the back side of the brake and then trim it until it times up correctly on the barrel.

If you were in Los Angeles, I do this type of work.

Looking at the threads and the thread protector, it appears the threads do not come down to the shoulder.....The thread protector seems to have a "skirt" below the threads that goes to the shoulder....hmmm....

The brake comes with an indexing screw on washer and it will not screw down to the shoulder....

Find a gunsmith or a machine shop.
All you need to do is remove some threads so that it threads over th unthreaded portion.
Second task is to remove enough metal off the back of the brake that it tightens down into proper alignment.
