I am looking at picking up a nice reliable accurate bolt action rifle. I was thinking about the savage i stated above. i will want to put a bi-pod and a nice 3-9 scope on it. i need it to be good out to at least 500 yds. so does anyone have any experiences with these type of rifles? Are they accurate are the reliable, and how is that accutrigger, does it take some getting use to? Is the bolt nice and smooth like a heavy barreld sniping type rifle should be or is it rigid. I don't like a rifle that throws you completly off target when you are cycling the action. i like it nice an smooth like my jeweled bolt on my model 70. Thanks appreciate any help.

Have a 10FP in .223. Shoots cheap Wallyworld ammo into sub one inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards most of the time.

Bolt is decently smooth, but I suppose you would say it has some over travel to the rear compared to say a Remmy 700. But you learn that easily enough.

For longer distance work like you mention, and for ultimate accuracy you need a scope with AO. 4-12x and larger have that. So I would say get at least a 4-12x scope.

Now some complain the Savage synthetic stock is a bit flimsy for a bipod. I have only used it on a benchrest or bag. But it is set up with swivels to attach a bipod. So maybe others with bipods can comment.

My floated model twelve 300 wsm (accu-trigger) shoots sub MOA @ 100 yds. with a harris bipod on the factory stock.

I've got a model 10

I've got a Savage model 10 in .308 and love it. It's ugly enough that I don't mind beating it a little in the deer woods, but accurate as all get out with 150gr JSP's. As for the accutrigger, mine is older, so doesn't have it, but the newer ones I've looked at didn;t seem to need any special technique to use and the pull was crisp.

I've heard the "no bi-pod, flimsy stock" thing before too.

This was when i asked about putting bipod on my synthetic win M70 06.

I asked my smith about it and he said it wouldnt make a difference unless your leaning on the rifle pushing down. I consider him a good source.

You will get much more accuracy than you pay for. Go forth and be happy with your choice............Essex

Savage 100 yard targets

These are real small out there.

Amen Brother:cool:

I have a M110 FP in 300WinMag. will shot Sub-MOA groups all the time. I use it in high-power turnaments out to 1000 yards. You won't be disapointed in it at all:D

I replaced the factory stock with a B&C stock, just cause it looks cooler (and it's significantly stiffer) and put a Super Sniper 10x fixed scope on mine in .308 and could not be happier. Get it.

Thanks everyone for the replies I was pretty sure that everybidy that had one loved them but i was wanting to make sure, i was at the range today and got to shoot the rangemasters model 10 in .308 which was exactly what I want.I got to shoot it out to 200yds and i was very pleased the trigger was exceptionally smooth and broke at around 1 pound at the most and the accu-trigger was alot easier to get used to than I thought. i loved it. He had a bushnell, 18x on it. no bi-pod though. I have decided that I will pick one up and i will follow ESLDUDE's advice and put a nice 4x-12 on there. Well thanks to everyone!

Have a 10 and a 16.
Great guns. One comment on the Accu Trigger. Have one on the 16. It's great for targets and stationary targets but not good for moving targets. I have missed many more coyotes than normal (not that I don't miss my fair share) over the last 2 years because of this. You have to compress the accu component of the trigger to set it before squeezing the actual trigger. I initially set mine toward the lighter side but since then I increased it back up to about 2.5 lbs. If you have gloves on you have a hard time sensing when you have fully depressed the accu component of the trigger without putting a little pressure on the trigger.
