savage model 11 .243

i bought this rifle a couple years ago from a buddy that had no use for it. after collecting dust for a couple years i decided it was time to turn this plain jane into something that wouldn't get left at home the next time i go to the range.

here is the rifle as i bought it new and unmolested


so, i decided it was time for a change and off to the gunsmith she went. when she came back she had a 16.5" barrel crowned with a nice crisp trigger.


i then fabed up a rail to accomadate the use of a hunting scope or red dot.


then it was time for paint. step 1: go from a black base to desert tan


step 2: add stencil to base


step 3: paint stenciled base


step 4: add stencil to color two


step 5: paint stenciled color two


step 6: add stencil to color three


step 7: paint stenciled color three


step 8: paint barrel and bolt


step 9: remove all stenciling and assemble

Tell me more about the scope rail. How long? How attached at barrel (affixed or just a spacer)?

How much did the barrel shortening and trigger job cost?

I have a Stevens 200 in .308Win that is just asking for that treatment! (Unless a reader wants to trade for a same/similar rifle in 223 or 243 in Florida before it goes under the knife! I've been traveling, so have not made this post in the trading section of the website, until I return home.)

the scope base is a 12" standard picatinny blank. since my reciever is flat in the rear and rounded in the front, i used used all the tools i had available at the time (my dremel tool and a small level) and slowly formed the blank to my reciever. i used all the mounting holes in the reciever and the one on the barrel (5 all together) to secure it. the one on the barrel is primarily for stabalization. to aid in the fitting process i used a piece of cardboard cut out with the same profile as my reciever as a guide. it took me about 2 or 3 hours to get the piece to fit properly and i then bedded it to the reviecer. the base i used can be found at http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=829948.

the barrel job cost $55 and the trigger job cost $65. though now seeing how easy it would have been for me to do myself i wish i hadn't had the trigger job done.

i plan on this being my primary hunting rifle. i would feel very comfortable taking any game we have here in Georgia with this little .243.
