I have had the urge for a nice tactical bolt gun for a good while. I really like Od Dog (Al's) rifle, but my budget is a bit thin right now. I have a real nice.. older Savage 110 in 30/06. It came with a nice laminated Boyds stock. I recenly became aware this rifle had some issues that needed fixing.
The bug hit me !
I wanted a black rifle that was real scary lookin
A scary rifle needs an acronym far a name so i came up with T.H.U.D.

Bet you shakin in your boots already!.
I wanted a nice stock, and i really like the Hoage overmolded stocks. They happen to be in the $200 range so I would just have to improvise.
I picked up a nice Burris FullField II E1 Cabelas had them on sale for $119. hard to pass up.
Then I had this great idea for the stock

These Boyds stocks always seemed to be a bit fat to me. Especially in the wrist area. So I went to whittilin on it and thinned it out and contoured it a bit. Then I defined the pistol grip and raised the area between the trigger gaurd and grip.

Next I sprayed it with a clear Poly. Then I gave it some texture

Then I hit it with a rubber like coating known as Plasti-Dip

Now I am doing some research on a nice adjustable trigger and .. depending on how it shoots I may look into a heavy varmint contour barrel maybe in 20"~22"? Once I get it all figured out I will probably shoot the metal in CeraKote -- Maybe a green? or dark earth??
I gotta get out and shoot it. Just need the weather to cooperate...

Wow, with the chills running up my back, I had trouble finishing the post.

Nice job on the stock, do you plan on leaving it in the original caliber, not that there is anything wrong with the '06?

I have thought about a caliber change if I get another barrel.
If I did I MIGHT go with 300WM.?
After thinking about it though 06 will do everything I need. I don't currently reload so I need a cal that has a bunch of options and there must be a gazillion different loads for 06 and if you go somewhere like Cabelas just have a look at the ammo section and count the different loads and brands. Last time i was in they had 2 full rows probably 60 different kinds.
Sounds like what I need.

Good news
The son and I headed out to Alpine gun range this past weekendfor a Saturday full of us excercising our 2A rights to the fullest extent possible.
Anyhow I finally had a chance to get some shooting time with the T.H.U.D.
First off I need a new way to bore sight my guns... My old Bushnell plastic thing with the collet that slips in the barrel is just not even close.
From past experience I put the crosshairs at the top left corner of the 100 yd target and took my first shot. I actually hit paper in the lower right corner. It took a total of 5 shots to get close, and I was in the bottom right corner of the center spot which on the target was about a 2 inch ring. I was able to make a 5 shot ragged hole on the bottom right corner of the ring.
Unfortunately I had to run to Dallas to meet someone for lunch, or I would have stayed long enough to recover the target to prove my story.... So it goes
We came back and shot a couple of round of trap before closing time. The range was EXTREMELY busy. So it will have to wait for the next trip to put the final tweaks on this rifle. I did learn that my hunch was probably correct. The Remington 168 grain ammo in the green and yellow box is still top notch ammo in 06 and ....T.H.U.D. likes Remmington!

T. H. U. D. gun

Well Blanco looks like your really getting into this gun thing, nice looking rifle get some target pics posted. Al

This gun thing is an addiction Al and I think it is all consuming, I got it real bad!
I will get back to the range in the next couple of weeks and I will get some proof of damage photos!

While I was at the range this evening sighting IVAN in I let my son shoot T.H.U.D.
I thought I had it sighted in pretty well the last time I shot it but I had been shooting all day and had the jitters.
Young son shot half a box of ammo shooting the horizontal string across the top.
I pick it up and shoot it 3 times and put the 3 lowest shot on the target on it?
I guess it's just the difference in our eyes? Still not too shabby
