Savage Shotgun/Westpoint model 167

Hello, my buddy wants me to look into "fixing up" his shotgun. He got it years ago from an old man who gave it to him as payment for helping him move.

It's a Westpoint mod. 167 Series D by Savage 12 guage shotgun 2 3/4" and 3" shells.

The butt stock is cracking along the pistol grip and the barrel looks to have been cut down (poorly).

The action is very sticky, it takes some muscle to rack the forend back but overall it has no rust and blueing is 95%.

I've found two replacement barrels on gunbroker but no stock. Plus I don't know how to disassemble it.

Any disassembly advice would help and maybe advice on fixing the butt stock (if I cant find a new uncracked one).

OK, I maganged to disassemble the shotgun w/o much trouble...Not as easy as a Mossberg 500 but not super difficult (if i did videos, i'd do a youtube video).

My main problem is gonna be (as stated above) the barrel (removal) and buttstock (finding replacement).

The barrel is screwed in and with a vice and hand strength I couldn't budge it, plus at the chamber of the barrel is a slot where the extractor (for the bolt) fits into. SO, it will have to be a precise fit to get a new barrel on.

The buttstock is cracked at the grip and the toe. There are skinny nails (I didn't notice before) holding the toe on and nails holding the butt plate on. I'm sure I can take those off but I want to find a replacement before I do that. I want to sand and refinish the forend and butt stock (in case anyone is wondering why I'm messing w/ the wood).

You can clean up the cut end of the barrel pretty easily and have a 'smith put a new bead on it. That'd be a lot easier and cheaper than finding a barrel and having it fit.

As to its being hard to rack...lubrication does wonderous things.

As far as the barrel is concerned, i measured it today...

ughhhh someone bubba'ed it and it's just may be under 18"... especially with the uneven cut, it makes it very difficult to get an exact measurment but I want to be on the safe side.

Is there an option of getting a gunsmith to put a muzzle brake or maybe a choke on the end permanantly to get past the 18" mark?

Did you measure it with a cleaning rod down the bore, tight against the bolt face with the action locked??

You can't measure a barrel on the outside.

RC, yes I did measure it w/ a wood dowl rod against the breech face.

Marked it and measured.

I think a muzzle brake permenanlty added would be the way to go.
