Savages? Remingtons?

I'm looking for an accurate but fairly inexpensive modern bolt-action centerfire rifle, preferably with a scope, and I've been thinking about Savage, specifically the 11FCXP3 package in .30-06. I have heard that Savages have extremely good accuracy right out of the box. Does anybody have experience with these, especially this particular model?

Also, I am thinking about Remington. They're a little pricy, it seems, but I have also heard excellent things about them. Can anyone tell me about the 710, preferably in .30-06? And in the 700s, what is the difference between the ADL models and the BDL models?

The primary use would be target shooting, with hunting only a possibility.
 
I have a Savage 10FP in .223. It is scary accurate at any price. Savage is famous for making accurate barrels, it's their triggers and stocks that used to offend.

Their new Accu-trigger is nice, so one problem solved. Slap a Bell & Carlson stock on it (about $90), and you're good to go.

I also have a Remington 700 PSS in .308. Niiice, but almost three bills more. Not that the paper notices.

I'd be shocked if you weren't thrilled with the Savage. Good luck. :)
 
I have a savage in .308 and love the accuracy. the trigger is not that great, but off a bench it shoots fantastic groups. My brother-in-law has a savage in .300 mag. and "loves it too".
 
I've got one.

The stock isn't pretty, as some will tell you, but it shoots well. I used it last year while deer hunting St Clair county in Alabama. Will use it again this year.
 
I have one of these before they added the alphabet. Mine is a plain old 111cl. in 7mm. rem. mag. Still shoots better than I can hold it. Mine still had the wood stock. The quality of the wood wasn't that great. Shold make you a great rifle.

You just described Savage.
My 111 in 25.06 shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yds with my handloads.
The trigger pull on a Savage is user adjustable, got mine safely down to 3lbs.
I can't comment on the Rem. 710 because I've never handled one. I will say I've not read many good things about them though.
 
first things first, even without the price difference, the Savage pretty much wins hands down. they shoot better, are less finnicy(sp?) 99% of the time, and except for the stocks much better guns OTB. Last i heard the accu-trigger has not yet been added to the non-target models, that addition to the WhOLE line and a redesign of the stocks would make them wordl beaters (then again you have to weigh the price increase this requires).

secondly, you want to know which is better a savage or a 710?!!?? dern now THAT'S an easy one lol. the 710 has proven it's self to be a total and complete POS. crappy scope, crappy rifle. so far the only people i've seen give it a good reveiw were folks Remington GAVE one to as well as a week at some fancy hunting lodge..... you decide if you want to believe them or not.

the 710 is an abortion that Remington put out to compete with the bargain brand package guns (like the savage), probem is to make the profit they seem to require for each gun they sell, they had to build not an "inexpensive gun" but a "CHEAP gun".

as if my vote wasn't already obvious, go Savge!
 
Couple of years ago I bought a 10FP in .308 and was happy about the whole deal with the exception of the trigger. Ended up getting a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger and my complaint was solved.

Found myself in the market for another rifle: .223 this time. Ended up with another Savage 10FP, this one with the AccuTrigger. That trigger is amazing. Should get to the range with it this weekend or as soon as the mounts and rings get in. I have a Leupold VX-II that I can't wait to get sighted in.

Savage is first in my book.

If accuracy is a concern, the lean is towards the .308 over the 30-06. If you're using it for primarily target shooting, the .308 wins hands down.
 
love my 10FP in 308!! :)

the savage package deals come with very cheap scopes, but will get you shooting quickly and inexpensively. You can save up for a better scope later if you find that this one does not suit your needs...
 
So, basically, the Savage 16FXP3 or Savage 11FXP3 in .308 would probably be my best choice, the Remington 710 in either caliber is s#!t, and I really should choose .308 over .30-06 for accuracy. Thanks. Anything else?
 
The .308 gives you a short action. Ammo is readily available just about everywhere. One will do anything the other will do. Either is a good choice. The big decision is blued or stainless. Strictly personal preference. targets and wildlife don't care.

Although I havent shot it yet{I will this weekend} I am very happy with my Savage 111. The stock isnt quite as refined looking as the Rem 700 but it looks good to me. It certenitly isnt something you'd look at and say "damn thats ugly". For the money,i think it is a heck of a deal.

I got mine on sale at a Bass Pro Shop for $299. The Rem 700 was $380 without a scope and the 710 was $329.

Personally I think the 710 is butt ugly.

I'd also question the choice of 30-06 for target shooting. If you think you need a .30 cal., get a .308.
 
MagKnightX, I'll echo the idea of a .308 over an '06 if your primary interest is target shooting. Hunting, I'd go the opposite way.

In both cases, handloading makes best performance more possible.

In the .308, practice ammo is much cheaper.
