So separate primers from the brass, brass is obviously brass, primers are lead, or what? I have saved every primer I have decapped, various bottles full, I guess I should turn them in...just not sure what primers are, embarrased to say!
Russell, the priming compound is generally lead styphnate. Pretty much the compound is burned out on primer ignition. The primer itself is generally brass, sometimes nickel plated.
Though as some report above the anvils may be other metals.
Metallic primers are brass, normally the same brass as the cases. Shotgun primers are steel, with a very small amount of brass used for the cup, so keep shotgun primers separate from metallic primers, or the recycler won't pay you brass price.
What about aluminum cases? Are they recyclable if they have a brass primer intact? I've saved all I've ended up with, worth mucking about depriving the boxer primed ones or do they pay so little for aluminum it's not worth doing?
My recycler accepts aluminum cases with the primer intact. They don't bring much, but I hate to see anything wasted, so I save them and take them with my brass and copper. I think it all depends on your recycler's policy, since they vary by company, individual and locale.
I have a friend in the recycling business. Occasionally he gets large amounts of range brass. I have traded him my spent primers for range brass, pound for pound. He told me that if I brought my sorting trays, he would let me pick out just what I want.
