So I was talking to a casual acquaintance about the situation in Darfur. Another Jew. He was discussing how the atrocities there are horrific, and that it was like a holocaust.

He also suggested the reason there hasn't been more action related to the matter is two things:

#1: There is nothing of value in Sudan to us

#2: These people are black, and often Muslim.

And, he suggested I go to the website, and possibly donate money. So, I look on the website, and I see, drumroll please.... Nancy Pelosi, George Clooney, and several other celebrity yutzes holding starving black children in various wonderfull photo ops.

And I look at the proposed solutions to the issue in Darfur.

I notice several things:

#1: None of the solutions really get down to why people are killing each other there.

#2: I saw no plan to arm and train militias to defend villages, and protect life and property.

#3: There was actually a desire to disarm people there.

So, I talk to my acquaintance about these topics, and he looked as if I'd taken a dump on top of his head.

But, I have a hard time seeing the violence end without fixing the problems which led to people committing the acts.

And, I have a hard time seeing the genocide end without arming and training the victims to resist the murderers.

It all looked like a silly photo-op for rich people in the US to look like they really care. If they really wanted to help, they wouldn't suggest UN aid trucks, they'd send a shipment of AK-47s and RPGs, along with a military specialist, and then send in a few folks to teach these people a little about private enterprise.

They get rich, and have means to defend themselves, and the genocide will be really hard to accomplish.

Sorry Mordechai. We can't have actual solutions when the money's in the problem.

I dont think that there is really even a aolution that can be achieved by an outside nation. It is all well and good to say that we should arm and train the victims, but it has been shown in the past that our newly armed and trained people will simply become the new oppressors and we would then have to arm and train the new victims, who were the previous oppressors. This cycle would not end, and the only virtue would be that everyone would get a turn at being both the victims and perpetrators of atrocity.

There is something broken in Darfur, something that makes the people there want to kill each other. Take that away and the problem solves itself. Good luck figuring out what that thing is as it is probably a whole mess of things, many of which actually exist in the minds of the particpants.

I'm not trying in any way to say we should change or alter our foreign policy. All I'm saying is it is a problem that a guy was trying to convince me to help through supposedly private charity, and I saw no reason to. Mainly because they cannot explain in any way how they can avoid the other side not becoming the oppressors, or how they can even stop the genocide in the first place.

As to our rights, I would point out an MLK quote that is true. "Injustice anyway is a threat to justice everywhere."
