I have three choices and I'm not sure which to go for first. I like putting holes in paper and am still learning to make the groups get smaller. I don't hunt at this point.

The three choices are an AR, a CMP Garand or a 45/70.

Going for an AR, I'd try to find a stripped lower at the local gun show next week, throw it in the safe, buy more parts as budget permits and then eventually have an AR. I already have 223 barrels (rifle and pistol) for my Contender and plenty of reloading supplies. I'd look to get parts that would give me a weapon that qualifies for getting started in service rifle shoots.

The Garand would be either Field or Service grade. If the $100 difference is a go / no go issue, are the service grades better enough to wait until I have the cash? Or should I just get the field grade in case there aren't any left the next time I have cash?

Either the AR or the Garand would be my first semi-auto centerfire rifle.

If I went 45-70, I'd either get an H&R Buffalo Classic or a barrel for my Contender (which is not a G2). Will a new barrel of this caliber work in my old frame or would I need to search for an old barrel? This would put a > .30 caliber rifle in my battery as well as let me play with blackpowder cartridge shooting to see if I like it.

The fourth option is to play the lottery, hope I win and buy all three.

I don't know what I want to do.
