Saving for a Taurus .44 SPC 2.5" Stubby

I currently carry a .32 H&R Magnum that is made by Taurus. It is a fine revolver, and shoots true. I don't feel under gunned with the .32 H&R Magnum. After all I did kill a deer with that caliber. Also it is a great pocket pistol that carries very well.

After buying my Ruger SBH in .44 Magnum, I have been wanting to go .44 SPC in a revolver for carry.

I generally would get a .45 ACP if I wanted to go for a pistol, but I am setup to reload .44 calibers, and do not want to buy new dies. I also do not fancy the smaller .45 ACP pistols. I would have to get a full size frame if I bought a .45 ACP., and that isn't practical for me to CC.

Other than the reissue of the Taurus. Does anyone have suggestions on 2.5" .44 SPC revolvers?

You might try Charter Arms, I've no experience with them but the company is still around after changing hands a couple times and many here carry the CA .44's and it seems if you get a good one they work great.

Charter Arms? I have seen some good ones, and bad ones. I would like to have a Smith and Wesson .44 stubby.

I have 2 Taurus snubby's. The wife has a .32 H&R mag and I a .44sp. Have not had any problems with either. Both are ported. I have had issues with Taurus on anther gun which I got rid of. The .44sp is a rear pocket carry gun for me. I am ready to replace it with a 3" 45 acp for carry, the .44sp will be a back up in the truck gun. These were our entry leval ccw guns. The wife carries a Ruger LCR in .38sp now and shoots a 686 at the range. We reload all our ammo and the .44sp is one of my favorites to load for.

I own both, but am partial to Taurus over Rossi. Rossi is a good serviceable gun, though, which is more than I can say for that Charter I had in the 80s. But, I'd buy a Charter, just look it over real good for timing, gap, and such as outlined by the revolver check out. I ordered the one I had. They vary from time period to time period depending on which restructured company they're produced by. I think the new company has been okay from all the up comments I've read on this board by folks who bought one, so I'm sorta thinkin' about one of those .40S&W Charters that you don't need the moon clips for.

Rossi & Taurus the same? I would disagree! Rossi guns are better if for no other reason than the Co.honor there warranty &Taurus won't! The old Charter Arms were fine if you can find one in good shape. The newer Co. seems to have upped there Q.C.! New made guns seem to be better. I would look at S&W or Rossi or Charter Arms before a Taurus! Just an old mans advice .Good luck, have fun, Be safe!

Well my Taurus 731UL in .32 H&R Mag. is a good little stubby. I have shot it a lot, and I carry it everyday with Georgia Arms 100 grain XTP HP bullets. Out of the stubby the 100 grain XTP @ 12" is shooting 1015 fps. That's not bad.

I'd wouldn't mind the Taurus if it is as good as my 731 UL.

I have both and the Rossi has a more compact frame that makes it easier to conceal. It seems that the difference is mostly in the size of the trigger guard.
BTW, all mine have 3" barrels. If you expect hollow points to preform avoid anything shorter as the one weakness of the .44 Special is low velocity.

Let's get to to tacks.

The 2 main Taurus .44 Special revolvers were the model 431 fixed sight 5 shot revolver and the 441 adjustable sight gun. I own both.

Yes there is a snub version the 445 whether it's a new UL version or a older one.

The 431 and the 441 are used gun only items. So is the Rossi 720 which is called a jewel by a gunwriter/author in a 2011 gun annual. He found the 720, bought it and considers it a top notch revolver. He explains why that is so in the article.

The 431 and 441 come in 3-5 inch barrels. The 5 incher is scarce as "hens teeth".

All 7 of mine are 3 or 4 inchers.

Problem is that Gun Broker.com and Gun Auctions.com do not have any for sale right now. However both places usually have them for sale. It's just a case of keeping an eye out for them daily or weekly.

There isn't a 44 Special I'd buy today for a self defense weapon. The Blackhawk/Vaquero are ok if you want single action. I own a Rossi 720 and a Taurus 431. Both wear a 3 in barrel. My Rossi is a fixed sight version.. I replaced the hammer with a spur. I did not like the hammerless that came with it. Both guns are great shooters. Both conceal very well. I give the nod to the Rossi for ccw though. It is lighter and has a smaller grip. I shoot Blazer 200 Gold Dots for defense. I load my own for target. The 431 looks to be a little better built in my opinion. It is a blued model. The 720 is SS. I'D never part with either of them. Charter Arms 44's are garbage in my opinion. The S&W Nightguard is way over priced and ugly. The new Taurus 44's are ugly as well. And a 2.5 barrel is not likeable either. So get on the hunt, and find a good Taurus 431/441 or a Rossi 720.

I have 2 441's with 3-in barrels, a Rossi 720,,2 445's, and a Charter Bulldog. All of these guns are great, IMO. I don't know what others have experienced with Charter, I have had 2 both recent vintage and they are great, lightweight, compact, and have good triggers. The Tauruses are also great, and I will not part with any of them. Taurus is currently building the 445 Ultralite with a 2-in barrel, and the Charter has a 2.5-in. barrel. Good luck with whatever you choose. I'm sure the S&W's are good guns as well, but you will probably never find one for under $800 as they are long out of production.

I may be wrong but from what I understand they're a lightweight with a Ti bbl shroud and cylinder and not a "total titanium"

What I would like to find is a lightweight 44 special with a 4" bbl so it would be legal for Arkansas deer hunting

I found a Rossi M720 for $345 near my house. It is not dinged up, and looks as if it just needs a good cleaning. It is the hammer-less model.

What are your opinions?

Speaking of Taurus snubbies, I have a secret fondness for this one. Will go nicely with my rossi 454 lever, But at nearly $700, it'll have to wait. A while.

It locks up tight, and has a good looking cylinder gap. It isn't worn or mared up.

I own a Rossi 720 as well. I am carrying it as I write this. It is my daily CCW. Mine was hammerless as well. I didn't like that feature, so I bought a hammer and replaced it. I would not part with this weapon for anything. It is a true shooter. I keep it stoked with Blazer Gold Dots. For practice I roll my own. I shoot 200 rnfp backed by 6 gr Unique. A very pleasant load to shoot.
I also own a Taurus 431 blued in 44 Special. That is another life time keeper. The 44 Special and the 357 Mag are what I trade out as my ccw's. My 357 is a Speed Six. I know I am very well protected with either caliber. If you need more then 5 or 6 shots, better get a shotgun.

Got One! Rossi M720 Hammerless

I bought the 3" Rossi M720 Hammerless model. I got it from the Pawn Shop in town.
Big joke on me. I told my wife about it, and then called the lady at the shop I was coming to get it after work. Well the wife shows up at the shop, and buys it.
Now I show up at the shop, and they say they do not have the revolver anymore. They sold it about an hour and a half ago to some guy who come in looking for a .44 SPC.
I was shocked. This happens to me all the time. I just said okay, and went on about my business.
I got home, and the wife had it for me with a box of Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain .44 SPC.
