I cant' remember now what the name of the program was, but it was basically a roundtable consisting of news media, federal, state and local elected officials, health care professionals, hospital administrators, law enforcement, etc. Anyway, the scenario was a terrorist attack on Boston using pneumonic plague. The way these supposed experts and leaders dithered, tap danced, and dodged the tough issues reminded me of what went down in NO during the hurricane. Scary program. If anyone has seen it, can you please tell me what the title was so I can order a copy? It appears to have been several years old since I recognized several people who are no longer in office.

Every once in a while, the moderator would inject new information into the discussion as if the scenario was an ongoing situation. If our ability to respond hasn't improved since, those who aren't ready to take care of themselves and their families are in for a bad time. The scariest part for me was when they discussed detaining people who wanted to leave the emergency room when told they would have to stay for observation due to being exposed to the disease.

The hospital administrator blithely replied that they would call the police, to which the moderator replied, "Now you've exposed the officers. What are you going to do with them?" Ugly, since later in the program one of the federal officials piped up and said that all hospitals are mandated to have isolation facilities for infectious diseases. When asked how many isolation rooms were required to meet federal standards, the reply was "one".

Moral, learn how to prevent exposure and have the materials at hand to do so at all times. A HEPA mask will be part of my "immediate action kit" from now on. I carry rubber gloves on my duty gear and always have it readily available when off duty. Cheap insurance, as far as I'm concerned.

HEPA wont save you from bio agents, many of them can get you just by exposure to wet membranes (including your eyes).
