Available with 2 10 round magazines, the original day/night scope +carrying cases etc etc..excellent condition. except for one thing....

It has been re-calibered to .300 Savage to get around the laws in France.

Hence the question ... what on earth is a .300 Savage and how does it compare to the original caliber 7.62x39 I think...
 
SVDs are usually chambered in 7.62x54R, not 7.62x39. .300 Savage will be a step up from 7.62x39, but will not be as powerful as the 7.62x54R. The .300 Savage is the parent case for the .308 Winchester, and was developed in the 1920s to be similar to the 30-06, but failed to perform as well.
 
Also have a very nice AK variant in polymer that is fully auto in 300 Savage...

My bad on the case length, not very familliar with milsurp.
 
SVDs are chambered in 7.62x54R and are an honest-to-goodness battle rifle cartridge. But France doesn't allow ownership of firearms that shoot military cartridges.

300 Savage dates back to the 1920s as a cartridge for the Savage 99 lever action rifle. It is loaded to 47,000 psi. Being a civilian cartridge, its OK for a French civilian to own.

The 7.62x51 NATO is loaded to 62,000 psi and was derived from the 300 Savage in the 1950s. But would be impossible to own in France because its a military cartridge.
 
Military calibers are allowed but a real PITA to get permission for. It can take up to a year...

Versus non-military calibers where you just walk in, show your generic permit, and walk out with the weapon.

I dont know of any limitations on the amount of ammo you can buy..
But ammo is expensive irrespective of caliber. Most people reload...

Often at the range you will come across people letting off with auto-AR variants in .222 remmington :)
 
It's kinda like the Italians with their 9x21 IMI...

The question is whether you reload or not. If you do, I see no problem with the .300 savage. If you don't, it could be hard to find ammo. Even if you do find some it will probably be quite expensive.
