scabbard or just sling it across my back?

i recently got a hogue pistol grip for my pardner pump, i'm gonna use it hiking and camping in the woods for protection. i put a nice padded sling on it and it rides nice across my back, but i have seen some scabbards on ebay and have wondered about them. would they make it easier to carry my gun?, and how good are they about carrying and are they durable? i've never seen nobody with one and thought i would ask, i've also thought of the price which is $30-50 and thats alot of ammo there too, since my sling works good but if the scabbard would be better i'll probably get it. thanks for any help.

It'd keep it solidly in place, trigger covered, rest of the gun protected, and so on. I think it'd be worth it.

I'd probably also keep the stock on my shotty too... but that's just me. Or maybe at least a folding stock?

I like carrying my 20 gauge coach gun in a scabbard, can draw the thing like a handgun off my back. My 28" SxS 12, not so much. I'm not sure how a pump would work with a scabbard. I carry mine with the sling it came with, a Mossberg. Don't need it quick, though. Just carry it on the sling because I'm either walking in or out of the marsh with decoys on my back and a marsh chair or on my kayak with it. Need my hands free.

I don't do pistol grips on anything, but pistols.

Oh, BTW, got my scabbard at an army/navy surplus. I believe it was issue in the mid-east for carrying door breaching shotguns. It can be carried solo, on my pack frame, or even on my motorcycle. Actually, I got it for the motorcycle. Has my Rossi 92 in this shot, but the coach gun rides well in it.

First of all get rid of the pistol grip and put a real stock on it. That will dramaticaly increase your chances of actually hitting you shoot at.

i wanted the pistol grip to shorten the gun so it would be easier to carry, i've shot everything from shot, buchshot, and slugs and 20yds or less what i shoot at will be hit. and i'm now practicing 30yds which will be my limit as i will be using the gun for defense not hunting.

I would stick with a sling, I think a scabbord is a good idea on critters or screwed to a vehicle. It gets snagged up on me.

I don't know where you are but a pg only shotgun ain't that great for defense against critters or zombies in my neck of the woods.

I carried one in my truck for a couple years, the blast really scared the hell out of the cyotes I was shooting at! Although they were back the next nite.

Your really limiting the usefullness of your gun. Defense or otherwise.......IMHO

Scabbard here. Sealed for your protection, ribbed for her pleasure... Er, that was what I read somewhere.

Mossberg 590 Mariner in and out of the scabbard. Pistol grip on hand, not installed. Buttstock makes it work much better. Personally seen 2 things happen with pistol grips on shotguns that I'm averse to; 1) busted lip when discharged too close to face, trying to sight in down barrel; and 2) miss otherwise certain shots.

The scabbards make carry more comfortable, but also makes it slower to get to if you need it in a hurry.

Self defense could be some one shooting with a rifle at you from their Marijuana field. That could be over 20 yards. A shotgun is not just a long barreled handgun, get some training with it and see what works. I will guarantee you it won't be the PGO
