Scale missing magnetic damping tab - fix?

So the tin foil must be to keep the cosmic space particles from affecting the delicate balance? Do you also put it in a cardboard box to keep your breathing from disturbing the balance?
The foil is a makeshift way to form the weighing pans. (I chose that material for my post for the cheesy effect, or is that "affect"?). Any lightweight, inert material would do.

And yes, some sort of box to isolate the balance from the effects of air movement is necessary.

If we don't keep taking the thread off-topic (and I admit I am guilty of first introducing this tangent) we will have to start another thread, "Would you trust a scale you built yourself?" and I will be forced to actually build the thing.

Lost Sheep.

Back when I was a starving student and needed a sensitive scale for weighing model airplane parts for very light duration indoor models I made my own scale. It was calibrated with sample weights that I measured on the triple beam scales in the chemistry class at school.

It served me well for a few years but it's not an option that I'd recommend for most.
