I just wanted to let everyone know on here that someone tried to scam the gun shop I work at on Armslist the other day.

Here is the original Gunbroker ad with the photos I took...
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=317753732

Here is the scam ad someone is trying to pull on armslist

Just keep in mind that you always want to make sure that you get all the information upfront before you send any money. This scumbag is going to try and collect $3000 from someone by selling them a gun that they don't even own.

I have contacted armslist CS about having this person's ad pulled but so far haven't received a response and the ad is still up.

You're just angry he is selling it for cheaper. ;)

If you click on "listings by this user" he is selling guns from all over the Country. Shouldn't that be a red flag for Armslist?

If his listings are flagged as scams, and enough people flag them, they are taken down automatically. I used the "Listings by this user" link to flag all of his listings as scams. A few of them came down already, I'd encourage others to flag them as well. This guy is trying to pull a fast one, and policing by the firearms community is one of the best ways to stop it.

Since the original URL will now only show that the listing has been identified as a scam, here is a link to another of his suspicious auctions:

Tell me this isn't a scam!

I'm amazed people still fall for the "I made the check out too big, send some back" scam.
I only ship things after payment clears, not when it's received. This has turned off a good handful of badly-spelled and -capitalized offers.

Houses too.

When we listed our house for sale someone put it on Craigslist that we were moving to Africa to do missionary work and that our house was for rent. I emailed them for more info. They had opened a Yahoo email in my wife's name. I got a form letter wanting $600 per month rent and $500 deposit. Turned it in to the local police, Craigslist and the FTC. It was offline in 3 days.

If I go to Africa it will not be for missionary work.

I almost bought a gun on armslist recently. It was by mere CHANCE (and luck of memory) that I noticed the photos in the auction were exactly matching certain frames on a youtube video on a full-auto version of that weapon.

I asked the seller for current photos and a video (mentioning my name) of the weapon firing so I could verify it wasn't the same full auto gun I saw on the YouTube video that the photos were pulled from.

Never heard back from the guy.

I really like postal money orders
see, when I'm selling off some the duff I've ended up with, it's nice to pay shipping with the MO, if it doesn't clear, well, it doesn't ship.

As for bogus gun listings, why is armalist so bad?
I rarely hear about this from GB or on the boards

A good sticky for in here would be the ABCs of buying online. Not just through a regular online gun store like Midway but also help with auctions like Armslist and GunsAmerica.
Had nwilliams not noticed it was a gun he took pictures of, how would anybody know this was a scammer? I don't plan on buying offline unless it is from a reputable source that
is thoroughly trusted like Bud's and CDNN. The main reason being that I have no idea who it is or what they really have, verification of condition, etc. What are the things that give
scammers away besides blatantly copying another picture, which is hard to catch, so we can all earn what to look out for?

Hey! I accidentally stepped into one of those situations once. It was a house that was literally 5 houses down the street from the one that I rented at the time.

Saw it on craigslist, similar story etc etc.

I don't even know how these people expect to be taken serious with such obvious grammar issues. I suppose people fall victim once in a while though.

That advert has been flagged and no longer active. Insofar as Armslist goes, I have sold two handguns within the last two days using the free listing to locals only. Like anything else, and especially at this time of the year, the worst of the worst will crawl out of their sewers and try to scam the most vulnerable.
