SCAR 16: overpriced?

Yeah, you kept saying SS 18" and I thought you referred to this one: http://www.lmtstore.com/complete-wea...on-system.html

But still, $3k is quite a lot.

That's because I DID get a separate 18" SS SPR tube when I bought the 16" 7.62 LM8. This is an MRP, remember? One gun, multiple barrels for particularized applications.

But even then, the total price was still under $3,000.

LMT also shipped the extra barrel in the same box, so I saved on that cost too ... ;)

If you want crazy prices look at HK's 762 NATO AR version.

It makes a SCAR 17 look like the low cost option.

H&K is to military firearm what Schmidt & Bender is to rifle scope. As a Frenchy would say "creme a la creme". Unlike FN Herstal at which bicycles, cars,.... were made H&K focuses on firearms, their design and puts them in hands of modern gladiators aka military commandos.

That would be creme de la creme and FN has been making military fire arms since before HK's founders were even born

FN only makes firearms now and I wouldn't be surprised to find more FN made weapons in US SOCOM armories than HK weapons

I once purchased a quality firearm at dealers cost in the early 1990s. When they asked how much I paid I told them the amount but didn't mention it was dealers cos. they thought it was expensive for what I got. Some folks are never satisfied with the cost. Get what you really want and can afford. If you are the type that holds onto firearms forever, you will still be enjoying it 20 years from now. I do know folks who thought AKs were way overpriced at around $200 back in the day.

Yup. The only thing HK does better is marketing. They've managed to convince hordes of young men that "if you buy our expensive weapons, you, too, will be an operator"

Wow! Somehow this thread has devolved into a cow patty sling fest with no manufacturer on the "safe list."

So far we've heard that FN and their SCAR 17 isn't battle proven. In reality, the '17 has been putting in work with USSOCOM for several years now.

We've heard that LMT has no track record in the military arena. The real world data is that they have long since been a provider to the US Military (Mk18 & M203 anyone?). The British SAS chose the MWS (.308) to fulfill a DMR role, and like the SCAR 17, it too has been putting in work in some very unfriendly parts of the world.

THR has a long history of slamming HK on account of price, just as it does any rifle with a price tag over $600. Now, we are arguing that they are all hype and marketing to get civilian buyers in the US to buy their way into "Operator status." In the same breath, albeit another thread, it will be argued that HK doesn't care about the US consumer, they don't want us to have cool toys, etc., etc. The honest to God truth is that the US Civilian market is NOT HK's primary audience, and it never really was. At the end of the day, while HK's civilian offerings may not be congruent to their military offerings, it is undeniable that HK weapons continue to be chosen in dangerous, high risk scenarios in the very same aforementioned hot spots.

The one thing that seems to be widely agreed upon is that the SCAR 16 (5.56) doesn't offer significant improvement over the currently issued AR type rifles. When the focus shifts to .308, the landscape changes dramatically. All of the newer .308 offerings deliver excellent reliability and accuracy. Weight, cost, and minute variances in accuracy are what's left to pick over.

My LMT MWS with a NF 2.5-10, an Atlas and an eMod is easily 12 lbs or more. If I had to grab a rifle to head out the door, it would not be the one I'd grab, and weight is a big part of the reason why. This is where the SCAR 17 excels. The new SR25s follow close behind in terms of weight, and then there's the rest of the heavy pigs...

LOL

I think the SCARs are cool, but they are overpriced for what they offer. You can get a piston-driven top-of-the-line custom AR all tripped out with rails, optics, etc or a Galil ACE, Tavor, AUG, or a number of other nice rifles for less than the price of a SCAR.

You think junk rifles are worth as much as a typical AR?

Didn't say that at all.

The sad thing is that junk rifles sometimes cost more than good rifles.

Everytime I see an overpriced franken-built AR priced at $1200 when a quality Colt or BCM can be had for around $1k I just shake my head.
