Scope adjustment problem

I just recently got into shooting a scoped rifle (Savage Axis .308 and Weaver 6X24)
I was getting 1/2in. groups at 100m, but I wanted to eliminate shadow by moving the scope closer to my line of sight. That involved moving the rings back one notch on the rail.
My problem is; when I went to re-zero the scope, there wasn't enough elevation adjustment. My rounds were hitting 8in. low from the center adjustment and the scope has 300 clicks from stop to stop. My shots are vertcally centered.
Any ideas on what changed, or what l can do to get back on target?

If I understand the question...You should not have to re zero the scope just for moving back a notch, why worry about being optically centered at 100 yards?

Sounds like your scopes objective is touching the base.
As I said, I'm new to shooting with a scope. What does it mean when you say that the objective is bottomed out?
I adjusted 150 clicks from the down stop before attempting to zero. Shouldn't I be left with 150 to adjust up?

He means the outside of your objective bell is hitting thr rail or the barrel. Pictures might be able to help us figgure it out as well.

When you receive a new in the box scope they are set at optical center, once mounted on a rifle they are typically 1 1/2 inches above the center of the bore therefore it doesn't surprise me that it is shooting 8 in low.
I would bore sight the rifle to a orange dot at 50 yards then adjust the scope to match the bore, take a shot to ensure you are on paper, if so then measure difference from point of impact to center of orange dot to continue adjustments remember you are adjusting point of impact' also that scope turret clicks typically are 1/4 inch at 100 yards meaning 50 yard adjustments need to double so if your off center 2 inches at 50 it will take 4 inches of scope adjustments. ...
I don't explain things very well anymore so I hope others may join in to get you fixed up.
Regards
J

This could very well be it. I have an Axis as well, and with high rings if I moved my scope too far back the objective bell would touch. I ended up needing x-high rings anyway for bolt handle clearance which as a side benefit eliminated the scope bell issue.

When you moved the rings back one notch did you loosen up the ring screws, top saddles that hold the scope to the bottom section of the time mount? If not it could torque the scope, twist it, enough that it won't t zero.
My shots are vertcally centered.

In which axis are your shots centered? Height or right up left. Vertical implies height.

I changed s set of rings from weaver bases to Leupold type, front door rear centering screws. The front slot was so tight that it wouldn't align properly.
Was 2 I'm low and 11 in left with no adjustments left. Went back to weaver bases,.

It's possible that is your issue, or could be scope objective hitting as has been mentioned. The change is that you moved it. Do go back through the process and make sure it's mounted correctly.

Thanks for all the replies. I found the problem with your help. The scope;s was touching the rail where it starts to bell. There is a scratch there where it touched.
I haven't shot the rifle since remounting the scope and hopefully I didn't screw it up.
Thanks again for the hints and schooling me on some of the terms.

It is very unlikely you damaged the scope. It's great to see forums like this help folks get things figured out. Thanks to all who cared enough to help.
