Is there enough clearance here between the scope bell and the barrel? It's not enough room to fit a Butler Creek Cap, but my main concern is barrel flex. The gap is about the thickness of a nickel. Its a 50mm objective using the factory rings that mount to the receiver.

You're good. You're not going to see the barrel deflect that much unless you're using your rifle as a pry bar.

Looks good to me. I ground down the portion of my scope cap that would not fit, it only needed to be a half inch wide strip that I ground down for the length of the cap.

I thought about that, but doing so would decrease the clearance further. I understand that the scope clearance would remain the same, does it not matter?

If that part of the barrel flexes at all, you have some serious issues. As long as you can get a folded sheet of paper between the scope cap and barrel, you're good.
