I recently came in possession of an M-77 (.308) and want to be able to take deer to elk-sized game at ranges between 500-1000 yds. Any recommendations on a scope for under, let's say, $500?

Since nobody seems to want to touch this------lets just say----your yardage requirements are being a bit unrealistic.

For hunting in general---not taking into account the caliber and game sought.

For that rifle I'd put on one of the various 3x9x40's and be done with it.

tried to answer this question yesterday, but had some goofy things happen and the reply was evidently lost.

anyway, the simple answer to your question is nope. not for that dollar limit.

also, because you are asking such a question, it makes me think you don't have the experience/skills to do this.

concur w/ obg... get a 3-9 variable and practice w/ it until you are ready to move on. taking game cleanly at the ranges you speak of happens frequently, but the folks who do it are a breed apart from the average hunter or shooter.

from what I've read/seen, 500 yards seems to be about the limit for killing a deer with a .308, and that's with an excellent marksman. After that, it doesn't really have the energy to reliably kill. I have a 3-9X40 Leupold VX-II on my .270 M77. It was $280 and is plenty for normal deer hunting.

If you are contemplating a VX-I or VX-II, you should probably get a Weaver Grand Slam or Bushnell 3200 Elite. Both of those scopes give you just as good quality as the VX-I or VX-II line for the same amount of money (and even less).

VX-III on the other hand is a cut above...

Thanks for all the input, gents. Think I went a little overboard with the 1,000 yd. bit, but I'm giving serious thought to booking an elk hunt in northern New Mexico and the outfitter suggests being able to take bulls at 300+ yds. Considering their kill rate is about 70%, I want to make sure I'm coming home with something. Anyway, like I said, thanks - I've been leaning towards a Weaver 3-9X or a Leupold. (Had a Leupold 2X e.e.r. scope on my S&W #27 years ago and loved it).

Later.
