I don't know a lot about scopes and don't want to spend a lot on one. Still, I think I'd enjoy having some sort of scope on my 686+, and am open to your suggestions and ideas. Thanks!

scoping the 686
there are a couple directions you can go here. because of the limited range with a .357 what are you trying to accomplish with scoping this type of gun? if you need fast acquisition then a red dot optic of varying type and power that is available will be the best bet. if your looking for high magnification for shots that you have time then you need to look at a scope of variable power with quality optics. take a little time and decide what you want this gun to do for you then proceed in that direction.
