Hey everyone, I am getting my first rifle in a couple of months and I live in Australia so guns are limited and it is quite pricey for a quality rifle here, I am planning on getting a steyr Pro hunter (the cheaper one) chambered in .308 and I want to be able to put both a scope and iron sights on it, but I CAN'T find a scope base, I have found detachable mounts with weavers and I need bases before i get my full license (i have already applied), any help will be appreciated.

So, multi-market queries about a non-US manufactured product are a bit tricky. What might work on the Pro Hunter model sold in the US (nice rifle btw - congratulations!) may not work with yours.

This thread from the Steyr Club forum might help (as would a query there): https://www.steyrclub.com/threads/what-scope-mount-for-an-sbs-pro-hunter.8021/

This listing, and several others for a search "Steyr Pro Hunter scope base" suggest that bases that fit the Browning A Bolt will also fit the Pro Hunter. Maybe that makes it easier to locate in Oz? https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1...se-browning-a-bolt-steyr-pro-hunter-steyr-sbs

Maybe someone else will roll up with something more definitive. Good luck.

Hi again, thanks for the answer but I heard somewhere that on brownell's i could get my hand on some browning's a-bolt rails that will fit the steyr.

https://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=A+Bolt+2+piece+mount&ksubmit=y ?

I was also planning on getting these https://www.thegunnery.com.au/gun-s...-mounts-30mm-2-piece-weaver-medium-lever.html so i need the mounts in waver (but adaptors could be used if necessary.

I was also wondering if a iron sight block next to the bolt could be attached to this rifle.

BTW the only items for this rifle i need to by in Oz are the rifle and ammo so other accessories are fine.

The company that sells in my city buys directly from the US so it should fit

BTW, just ordered a Pro Hunter today LOL
Mines .30-06 so dunno what base I can get for it.
Think the EGW is for short action only.
Not much info of short vs long action differences on this rifle.

I own the Pro Hunter in .308. One thing to be mindful of is the clearance of the bolt handle from the ocular/eyepiece end of the scope. I put a Sightron Big Sky 4x16x42 on mine and had to put an adjustable cheek rest on the stock to get proper scope to eye alignment and have the handle clear the scope. I will say it is aPITA to have to remove the cheek rest to remove the bolt. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I am of short stature 64” and have the adjustable LOP set up as short as possible. Enjoy the rifle. Mine shoots better than I can. Likes the Barnes TTSX 150gr and Hornady American Whitetail the best thus far. BTW as best I can recall I ended up with Trijicon 2 piece steel picatinny style mounts and Burris Signature Z rings.

Got mine today. Think I'll order the Talley pic rail.
Action is kinda thick, laid mine on the counter at LGS and put a couple diff 1" tube scopes in proximity.
Def needs a 30mm tube to look right IMHO.

Leupold supposed to have a 30mm in new Freedom line ("coming soon" it says).
3-9X w fire dot duplex.
MSRP 519

I need to find a Hawke and Burris dealer to look through some stuff.

Checked online, seems like A bolt bases (2 pc) supposed to work on Pro Hunter.
Had some Weaver base screws..........6-48.
Went in fine.
So off to LGS I go.............still want a 1 pc pic rail, but wondered if I could slap something on until I make up my mind.
Weaver 47M bases are on.
Had some Leupold Rifleman alloy rings.......looked like crap on it.
Bought Burris reg Zee rings in matte.
Better.
1" though.
Used the long 1" rod and everything lined up great, so dropped a scope in lower ring halves to mock up.
Uh.........bolt handle clears (seen that as issue on some posts elsewhere).........but man a 40mm objective is way up off the bbl.
Stock comb is high and fit is right.
Dropped in a 42mm (unknown total O.D.) and it looked way better.

Scope that looked OK was Burris Droptine 4.5-14X w AO.
Not an expensive scope.
Two strikes against it are:

Its a lower end scope, seems silly to put it on a medium price rifle.
And............4.5X is still quite a bit of mag on the low end.

Pluses?

The scope would be good as a load checker, move rifle to rifle
The scope color/finish complimented the rifle
Seemed like decent glass actually.
....................

Dunno if a 50mm scope will fit.
Leupold 3.5-10X 50mm might be a good one.
There is a 50mm in the Freedom line (but also a cheaper scope- supposedly VX2 type or better lenses).

Could go Meopro 3-9x50mm

Thought about going to range tomorrow, had my EFR Freedom 3-9X laying out. Shorter scope, didn't look gangly, even though it sat high.
Flipped front base around and the scope would fit, but still too far fwd no matter what.

So..........no Steyr on the range tomorrow.

Think I'll upgrade my 700 scope to a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10X.
That will move the VX1 3-9X to the Steyr for temporary.
The VX3i am seeing around 320 bucks new.
Way cheaper than they used to be.
Better sign up to work a couple weekends LOL

Got my scope mounted today.
Redfield Revolution 3-9x50mm.
I flipped the Weaver bases so the slots were inward.
Mockup showed that might be an issue w reg 3-9x40mm.
So I got the Recknagel pic rail.
Positioning rings same as Talley ring/base combo or reg cross slot rings on Weaver bases........I could not get the scope back far enough.
The 50mm objective has a longer bell and reduces fwd tube length.
I moved the front ring back 2 slots and it is fine. Bell barely clears the fwd edge of the base (I could file that if I needed too).

So............for a Steyr Pro hunter, with M action (.30-06).........the Recknagel pic rail w Burris Signature Zees (med) and a Redfield Revolution 3-9x50mm works. Its got plenty of bolt clearance. Could go with slightly lower rings (signature Zee slightly taller than reg Zee due to inserts). But I didn't want the bolt handle to barely clear. Being a big game rifle I wanted some hand room.

It's got it, but not obscene amounts.
Am not against using a slight cheek riser if need be.

BTW, the thing is a tank. Ought to help w recoil.
Pinched nerve in spine today..........so not going to shoot it.

Dont mind the "R" logo. Can remove w acetone. The red "Redfield" on the turret body inset ....irks the heck outta me. Proly make a decal to go over it....maybe have it say " Steyr". It too can be removed w acetone but then it still has the inset

Gonna need a cheek riser IMHO. Have kydex and velcro. Might get a leather lace on cartridge holder. Cant hurt the stock LOL. Will check Andys leather after work, need a sling too

Gonna keep my Burris Signature Zee rings and Redfield 3-9x50mm. Gonna try reg Zee lows and a 40mm scope too.

Signature Zees....the lowest they make are medium.

Could run my 50mm in lows if i grind on the base. Unused area anyway.

Its usable as is.....just feels different and would be better w minor cheekriser. A leather ammo cuff might be enough.

friend of mine does custom lewtherwork. Hes making me a cuff/riser for my 527 right now. I can post a picture of it when i get the gun back.

Cool. Always like to see people's work.

:)

Got a sling from Andy's Leather and am going to order another. He does ammo cuffs too.

I can make a kydex riser. Have done several
