I am about to order a Steyr Pro Hunter in a 6.5x55. Have handled the gun many times. It just seems to fit me. Wondering if anyone else has had any expiriences with this gun before i go ahead and place the order tomorrow? I do love the bolt and the safety on this gun, the detachable magazine is another nice feature. Any info would be appreciated.

i have a Steyr in 280 & had a mountain rifle in 260. They are very good guns. No complaints. As a heads up , they take the same scope bases as a Browning A-Bolt. Talley even makes a base that takes Ruger rings for the A-Bolt/Steyr. Kind of a neat set-up. Check the rifling twist on the 6.5x55 to be sure it's not too slow.
Should be 1 in 9". They put a 1 in 9.5 twist on their 260s & they tended not to like 140 gr. bullets. I reckon a 9.5" twist is a bit slow for the heavier & longer "magic" 6.5/260 slugs. Should be a great deer rifle with negligible recoil.
One other neat feature.... you can adjust the length of pull by adding/removing spacers in the buttstock.

Yes, the removable butt spacers is very nice, if my wife wishes to shoot it. The twist is 1x9. So i hope it handles the 140's. That was something i really wanted to be able to shoot out of it. Because Sierra makes the 140's in Matchking and in Gameking. So this was an important issue to me.

Ive got one in 7MM Rem. I love it. Just be carefull about the fore-arm on the stock. it tends to be a little weak and couple possible come into contact with the barrel. Might need a little inletting

My Dad has one in 270 and after he adjusted the trigger it's pretty much his favorite rifle, which is saying a lot. He had a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 270, a relatively new production model 70, and I think he might have a Remington 700 as well all in the same caliber. Plus he has .223 Rem 700, several Weatherbys ranging from .240 to .340 and a Winchester in .458, can't remember the exact model.

Of all those it's the gun he goes to first for shooting and it's his desiganted hunting gun. The ones with pretty wood stay in the cabinets and don't go on bumpy trips ;)
