I'm trying to mount a Burris Short Mag scope on a Marlin 336. The eye relief is so generous that I'd like to move the scope farther forward than the mount permits. (However, I don't want to mount it on the barrel, scout style.) I see two options: 1) use extension rings (which I've never done before), or 2) cut an extra notch in a Leupold one-piece rail mount.
A couple of questions:
A. Are extension rings as stable as standard rings? (B-Square makes a set of low extension rings that might do the trick.)
B. Is it possible to cut the notches in the rail mount with only hand tools? Or is more precision required, such as making sure the new notches are square and aligned?
Thanks.
