I don't care for 'sporterizing' the Mosin Nagant, but I plan on picking up a few more and I'm just curious how would a non-gunsmith put a scope on one? It doesn't have pre drilled holes and I called a few LGS's with gunsmiths and no one wants to take the responsibility of drilling holes for a scope mount.

Any info is appreciated. :)

available for Mosin Nagants
market scope mounting kits, and turned down bolt conversion kits, all drill bits, thread taps and screws and technical help included in these kits,

I went with an S&K scout mount and Bushnell Trophy XLT 2-6x32 handgun scope on my M/N. The mount is rock solid plus I can put the rifle back into it's stock configuration in ~10 minutes.

Installing the PU mount isn't that big a deal, just be careful and take your time. Instructions are available online.

I don't want to replace the rear sight on it but just add a scope. I've seen pictures of several people with the scope added in addition to the regular sights.

*Thanks for all the feedback.

Putting a standard eye relief scope on your nagant WILL require 2 things. If you want to keep you normal sights this is the only option, as all scout mounts use some part of the rear sight base.
Youll either need to drill and tap your reciever for one of the permenant mounts, or you could get a Jmeck mount. http://www.jmeckscopemounts.com/ Ive seen one of those on a gun at the range, seemed solid and well made, and the owner was quit happy with it. I suppose if you really wanted to you could flip the Jmeck mount around and run a EER scope on it.

The second thing youll need is a turned down bolt handle. Id suggest getting it done professionally if you can afford it, i did my own but it WILL be redone when i have the cash.

If you remove the rear sight assembly on a M91, M91/30, or M91/59, there's a 3/8" dovetail on top of the barrel that scope mounts for .22 rifles or airguns will clamp right on to. The rear sight is held on with two pins and soldered, will require a hammer, punch, and enough of a torch to melt the solder. Remove the pins, heat the sight until the solder melts, tap the sight mount forwards off the dovetail, then clean up the dovetail and attach your scope mounts. No drilling or tapping, and it can be restored back to original anytime. Requires a long-eye-relief type scope, and no bent bolt handle.

Ron that setup is exactly what I used at first....then my ncstar scope came apart LOL. Those adjustable millets make life a lot easier.

I had the same experience here...that's why I'm using Bushnell Handgun scopes on my two surplus rifles with scout mounts. For ~$100 than the NcStar, the Bushnell scopes are hard to beat.

Darrell makes a first class scout mount for Mosin Nagants that don't require any modification to the rifle. You won't turn a 350 dollar Finn rifle into a 100 dollar rifle like ronjon did.....chris3

Rondog didn't alter the rifle in any way that can't be returned to factory.

For the record, those are photos of three different rifles that I've collected from Mosin scoping posts on other forums. None of those are my rifles.

I DO have a 1938 Tula 91/30 that I did this very thing to, but it cost me a whopping $69.95 on sale at the local Big 5 Sporting Goods store. And yes, I didn't harm the rifle at all, I just removed the rear sight, which I could put back on anytime.

Guess I need to take some photos of my own rifle and use those, I just put these up to illustrate that this dovetail exists and this method can be utilized.

<edit> These are photos of MY rifle and setup.

Once the barrel was corked, my 9130 keeps the holes in < 1 inch circle.
