So i was lookin at Mosin Nagant stuff on ebay and notices this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-Made-Mos...091909984QQcategoryZ73950QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Its cocking piece with a round "ring" welded to the bolt, says it makes it easier to use the safety.

Also, the PU scope mounts that are on ebays seem pretty cool and historical, but are there scopes besides the 26.5mm PU scope that would fit?(this one)

Or would I be better off getting this new, lower mounted style? (this one)

And one more thing. What is thing mount?
This one
It looks like it doesnt go over the receiver.

safety? who needs a safety anyways. as far as the scope mounts go, i looked into them and was thinking about getting one. However, the leupold I have has a 1 inch tube and I think most new scopes you can find have 1 inch tubes also, although I may be wrong. you just need to be make sure the tube is the the right diamter to fit in the scope mount. Once I got out and shot my mosin and I could hit a steel plate at 300 yards with iron sights it didnt seem like i would gain that much from putting a scope on anyways. most people on this site will probably tell you to keep everything original or buy a savage.

That's the proper setup for the PE type scope mount. Not cover the receiver but an old PE or equivilant scope would probably be needed for proper fit seeing how far back the tube goes.

As far as the round cocking piece for the safety... I've never used the safety on my Mosin. I usually load 4 and close on empty if I'm going to be walking around with it. While probably a good idea for those who use the safety, it's still not going to turn it into a modern day, one little click safe type of rifle. Force will still be necessary just you'll have a better hand hold to do it with.

The PU scope mount, just be careful with. Depending on the receiver, Hex or round, they can be a bear to mount. Also with the PU, windage adjustment can be difficult, IE grinding or shimming depending on where the scope sits... Although this is with the original PU scope, a new scope fitting in the PU ring probably wouldn't have the same issue as the PU Scope... Those when you adjust the reticles they move left or right, up or down... IE looking through your sighted scope you might have the whole reticle left, right, up or down of center. To get the picture centered requires mount adjustment.

Also it's going to require some stock modification. While not the EXACT directions, this should give you a general idea of the project

You could go the ATI scope mount way.. But personally I never liked the idea of hacking the bolt handle off and attaching a new one with the screw. I've had to use some serious force at times to open the bolt on my 2 Mosins, a screw I just wouldn't trust.

Keep it all original. If you want a Sniper model, Classic Arms just got a shipment of C&R-eligible Mosin sniper model 91/30s. These rifles come with the mount, scope and the whole 9 yards.

That safety piece is made by Jim "The Boltman" everyone over at SurplusRifleForums speaks of him as though he was a god, his work is supposedly exceptional. He also makes a sells great bent bolt handles, you can ship your bolt to him and have it altered or for a little more he'll sent you a whole new one. He definatly knows what he's doing, here is one of his personally customized Mosins ->

The Deer Hunter, Thanks for posting your find. I have been hating the fact that the safeties on my Mosins aren't worth using and I had no idea Jim was offering these.

I can cock it, it is just unnecessarily hard. Also if your fingers have any moisture on them at all the piece will snap back and bite the fire out of your fingers. It just isn't worth the trouble to use the original safety, I just load four rounds and leave the chamber empty when I'm out in the feild... the bolt is a much better safety.

Eh, I am kind of with cwmcgu2. For the field, just load one short and call it good. I love my mosins, but that safety is a pain. I think you would be spending money on something that wouldn't be such a great improvement.

I don't know what the problem is. I've used the safety in all conditions and never had a problem. You just grasp and turn. I suspect people are trying to use their fingers alone, instead of their arm muscles. I've seen folks do the same thing with Mosin bolts--ie they try to cycle it by grabbing the knob with thumb and two fingers, instead of slapping it open with the palm. Either that or America's grip strength has taken a serious nose-dive.

guys. if you have a failure to fire, why the heck would you cock it by the knob?!

its a Mosin. they cock on open. just lift the handle the drop it back down. easy as pie. no nob even required.

il admit, sharp corners or slippery fingers can make the safety dificult but its not impossible.

The best safety for a Mosin Nagant......

is the one between your ears...........hands down.......chris3

By "cock it" I meant cocking the safety back to move it to safe, was not talking about the bolt, sorry for the confusion... made since in my head!

I'm with Cosmoline... I've operated the safety dozens of times, sometimes in the freezing cold, sometimes in the blistering heat, etc... without any problems. I agree that most people try to use their fingers first; switching to forearm muscles makes it much, much easier.

One problem is that the mainsprings are sometimes overly tight. Wolf sells a new one for a few bucks you can get on Midway. It's strong enough to set off hard primers, but nowhere near as stiff as some.
