well its time i replace the scope on my .270 it came with a low end scope in a combo deal and i now have the $$ to replace it i have narrowed it down between 2 scopes.

Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 -$159

Leupold Rifleman 3x9x40-$199

Which one would you chose?

IU have nothing but good things to say about Leupold. Most of all they will stand behind their warranty. You may have a problem with even the most high dollar scopes, its just part of the game when your shooting guns with recoil. Leupold will take any scope back, either fix the problem and tell you what they fixed, or replace the scope.

I have used both the Var X models and the Rifleman. I am impressed witht the rifleman. Be aware they are compression ring scopes, so when you make adjustments to them to zero them in, it may take a couple of shots for the scope to "settle".

so is the riflemen worth the little extra $$$ ??? I hear ppl say the riflemen isnt that good or is it just not that good compaired to the higher end model leupold?

I have a nikon 4x32 on my .22 i really like it... its a tough choice

I have no experience but I have always heard that the VX-I is worth the price upgrade over the rifleman and is a much better scope. I don't know the truth to that or not but at that point I would probably go VX-I.

I went with the leupold riflemen I really like it they bore sighted it on my rifle and everything, Did I get a decent hunting scope?

Doesn't really matter what we think now does it? You bought it so all that matters from here is how the one you picked up does.

it looks really clear to my eyes but so did the nikon when i looked at the store, the rifleman has a very nice eye relief, im upgrading it from the scope that came with my mossberg atr 100, is it better then that?

Sorry I did not see this earlier but this is the scope to buy:

Of the choices above the prostaff is a far better scope. The rifleman is a joke for $200. The Team Primos in the link above is a Monarch for $20 more. Return the Leupold if you can. I don't mean to dog your new scope but with all the good $200 scopes out there the Rifleman makes no sense unless you just want something with Leupold written on it.

Youre welcome to return it, but I have shot multple Rifleman scopes and have been nothign but pleased with them. They have all held zero and not one has needed to be returned for any defect yet. Congratulations on your new purchase.

That's a pretty low bar :neener:

I'm just saying if you look at the Team Primos and then the Rifleman it is no contest the Primos is a monarch and is in a whole other performance level (think VX-3, Conquest and Bushnell 4200). The Primos has fully multicoated optics, a one piece tube, nice turrets with clicks instead of friction. Unfortunately Leupold cannot compete with the other brands at this price point.

Like I said I'm not trying to make the guy feel bad if he is happy with his purchase great, but if he can return the scope he can get a scope that is on par with a Leupold VX3 for only $20 more why not do it? That just makes more sense to me but to each his own.

i am tempted to return it today, it was kind of an impulse buy at the store yesterday. i paid $215 for it and im not sure if im happy yet, i believe one of the stores here carries alot of nikon scopes so im going to go there and see what they have. Are the buckmasters better then the rifleman i have? maybe i can afford one of those

There's nothing wrong with a Rifleman scope, and they have a fantastic warranty, but you pay for the name & warranty, so you probably don't get quite the features/quality for the $$, but you'll likely be happy with the scope. The prostaff, like most all Nikons, are excellent values. Yes, the Buckmasters are a step up, but the Omega & Team Primos are TWO steps up from the Prostaff, and top notch scopes, for just about $200 if you can swing it! Probably the best value going in a scope right now, bar none. Cannot say enough about the Nikon Omega - don't worry that it's a "muzzleloader scope" - doesn't matter at all. Close behind would be Sightron S2s. IMO, YMMV, etc.

I like the Nikon ProStaff, but for a little more money you could get a Burris Fullfield II for the a little less than the Rifleman. Far superior to both IMHO.

And the Omega is even better than the Team Primos, for the same or less price.

I don't want to start a tangent here but the Omegas do not have the fully multi coated monarch optics like the team primos has. Even the Nikon website tells us this as the Omega has the 92% Trans. while the Team Primos is the 95%. The Omega is a decent scope but is more on the level of the buckmasters as far as optics go. They do have more eye relief though for shotguns and muzzleloaders.

Like I said I don't want to get off track but I have heard you make that claim before and I have no idea where you are coming from with that. Out of curiosity what makes you claim that the Omegas are better scopes than the monarchs?

i may go return the scope today and just do more research, $215 is alot of money for something im not completely satisfied with

I'm with Shaggy on this one. The Burris is a very nice scope for the same or less money.
