All other things being equal, such as 4-12x 50mm, same knob types, same tube width, etc, and a price in the $130 range, which company would you go with?

If you chose 'other,' please specify what brand and why.

The Bushnell Elite series rifle scopes are superior to anything offered in the other product lines. You can even find them on sale at big sporting goods stores.
 
A hundred and thirty bucks will buy you a decent used Burris Fullfield II (don't get a Fullfield, tho) or Nikon Buckmasters (ixnay on the ProStaff) and may even get you a VariX-II if you're really lucky. I'd take any of those over a NIB Simmons or the low-end Bushnells. Another option is a Weaver - I've had good luck with them in the price range you're in....

A Bushnell Elite is a fine range/hunting scope, but well out of your budget....

Yeah, I noticed. :banghead: :( Anyone have any experience with the Barska's? BulletFan seemed to have a very good experience with his $250 model and their Excavator line is in my price range... ? Although after such a praising review, it almost seems worth it to wait a bit longer even and get the swat in 50mm with the 30mm tube...

How much do tube diameter and umm objective lens diameter really have to do with how bright the picture is?

I 've only briefly fondled one, and my overriding reaction was that it was HEAVY. Might be useful on a bench rifle, but I wouldn't put the one I saw (dunno the model nomenclature) on a field/hunting rifle.

I'don' think I've ever heard the subject of tube diameter come up before concerning the "relative brightness." As to the objective lens, the relative brightness is indicated by dividing the magnifying power of the scope into the diameter in milimeters of the objective lens. Hence a 10 power scope with a 50mm objective lens would have a "relative brightness of 5, which is a pretty bright scope.
 
Sorry, but I cannot recommend buying cheap glass.

Colin,

The ONLY scope for less than $250 that I could recommend is the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 which is a fixed power scope. If you are looking for a variable power scope, then good glass starts to become available at about $350. In that case, I would recommend the Sightron SII line of scopes. If I had to spend $130 on a scope, I would look for a used Leupold. Hope that helps.

Leuplod or nothing, but that is me. If all I had were $200.00 it would be a vx1 3-9. good glass at lower power is far better than cheap glass at higher power. I can see more, and clearer, with more detail with my 2.5-8 vx III and my pop can with his 14x bushnell
 
I recently got to use a Mueller scope for a couple of days, and for $150-$200, depending on the model, I think that I would buy Mueller instead of the others that you mention. I do have a couple of cheap Bushnells (in the $40 range 3 or 10 years ago), and they are entirely adequate.
 
Yeah, I saw those Meuller scopes on their page, but couldn't seem to find any reviews on them... They seem to have prettyd decent stats... but then again, so do some Tasco's...

My buddies and I have a saying, please do yourself a favor and read this carefully:

It's a much better idea to have a $400.00 scope on a $150.00 rifle than it is to have a $150.00 scope on a $400.00 rifle.
 
yeah, since tasco and bushnell are owned by the same company: you decide.

What if I have a $75 scope on a $300 rifle?:neener:

The bunnies fear the wrath of my Win94 and its 100gr plinker and 110 gr varminter bullets.

I just think cheap glass is hit-or-miss in quality. The ones that hit the quality mark are perfectly okay, and the ones that don't...maybe you can mount them on an old .22 or BB gun.
