Sorry if this has been covered extensively elsewhere.
I recently purchased an Armalite AR10 A4.
I plan to use this for target shooting as well as hunting our version of white-tail deer, (which in SC don't get much bigger than 180 lbs at best and are mostly taken at 100 yds).

I'm looking at the Leupold VX-III 4.5 X 14 either 40mm or 50mm. My gunshop reccomended trying the Boone and Crockett Reticle; possibly illuminated.
Does anyone have any experience with it? Looking at the Leupold catalog it seems the Varmint reticle looks pretty cool and might be more applicable to both applications. (I'm new to long range plinking however.)

Any help appreciated.

I really hate all the scope marketing that has gone on recently. I would go with a simple duplex reticle or some other version of a simple crosshair. Try to stay away from the reticles that hardly anybody needs and even fewer know how to use. If you are going to shoot at game 100 yds away then this will be just the ticket. Illuminated reticles have merit I think but will probably never get one because it takes away from the simplicity.

Most likely your retailer just wants to move the B&C scopes because they have a few or they see all the sheeple buying them and figure it is good for you too.

Make sure you are getting a deal on the VX-III as they are on closeout due to being replaced my a newer model. There are deals to be had out there which are few and far between in the world of Leupold. I prefer a duplex for deer hunting and mil dot for target shooting. A lighted reticle is necessary for hunting if you use one of those really fine reticles that is why I prefer a nice duplex they are easy to see in low light. Gunshops tend to recommend things that they have in stock so check around online too.

Thanks for the info.

My gunshop is pretty honest and have talked me out of buying stuff I don't need.

They don't have any of these scopes in stock and are planning on ordering the updated version of the VX-III.

My main conern is reticle choice. I have fine crosshairs on a 40mm Leupold thats on my Remington 700; I'm just wondering if a different reticle would be fun to play with.

Thanks again for all the help.

it will be 'fun to play with' , and if that is of interest go for it ,

BEFORE I START THIS IS JUST MY 2 CENTS -
the illuminated trijicon chevrons are very nice , and fun , the red dots are cool too , but the fine cross hair is the easiest to be accurate with the others are quicker aquisition , the rangeing options are helpfull at times ,

Taking a quick shot at a deer, wether it is standing or moving, the last thing you need, is to be trying to figure out which aiming point on the reticle you need to use.

The less clutter in the feild of vision the better. This is a different story if you are shooting at a distant woodchuck 200 yds away that doesn't notice your presence. In this scenario you have the time to use the ballistic calibrated aiming points of that type of scope reticle.

Simple, crosshairs for fast work.
Multiple type cross hairs for slower timed shots.

Just an opinion!
