I inherited a Remington 742 from my father who passed away a couple of years ago. I know this rifle very well, and I'm positive it's never had more than 5 - 10 rounds through it. Dad kept it in immaculate condition. He never even put a scope on it or adjusted the sights.

I'd like to put a scope on it, and spend some time with it on the range. I know a bit about the history of problems with 742's, but this one has so much sentimental value for me, I'll never part with it.

Do you have any suggestions for scope, scope rings and base? I don't want junk, but at the same time I don't want to spend a ton of cash scoping a rifle I don't expect to shoot better than 2 MOA. I'm just looking for a scope with respectable performance, and to let my son enjoy shooting his granddad's rifle on paper at 100 yards.

Thanks for your help.

I wouldnt put anything large on that gun. I am not sure what you intend to do with it but one thing I hate is a bulky heavy scope. 2-7 X 30 makes a nice scope that can reach out 200 yards pretty easy and doesnt add weight and fits in any gun case. My go to hunting scopes are 4-12 and 4-16 X 40. I abhor anything larger than 50mm objectives. I have one gun with a 50mm objective and I am looking to swap it out. I love Vortex and Weaver for entry level scopes. Bushnell makes a good scope as well but for the same money you might be better off with a used scope from Nikon, Leupold off ebay or the classified section of THR.
