well I went walking around my lgs today and noticed savage is running a $100 rebate on some rifles so I twisted my own arm and picked up a Savage 10fcp sr , been looking for a new 308 so now I have one, it has the 24in barrel
So next I will be thinking about a scope for it, I do have a Vortex Diamondback 4x12 x40 sitting in the safe you guys think this will be good or should I step up to a Vortex viper or Burris or ?
Since I spent most my extra family free cash on this rifle I will be on a budget of about $300 / $350 range or should I just mount up my diamondback which is almost new ?

Your call but this scope is temping me right now.

Vortex Optics Viper Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 6.5-20x 44mm Side Focus Reticle Matte $329.99 and free shipping from Midway.

vortex makes very good stuff. I have 2 crossfire 2 on savage 223rem rifles. even dropped one and still held zero.

If Vortex scopes weren't so heavy, I'd probably have one on each of my rifles. Give me a Leupy anyday though.

I'd mount the 4-12X40 on it, (it's not a 4X12X40, there is a difference), and go with it for now. Not my favorite scopes, but I'd use it for now to see how the rifle works.

I don't blame you, that is a good scope at a good price. Not a great scope mind you, and that is what it should be selling for IMHO. I have one like it except mine is a fine crosshair dot reticle (Mounted on a heavy barrel .222 Mag). I like it, but in the $300/$350 range is what they are worth to me. On sale they are worth it. I also have a 2-7 Viper I bought on sale.

I agree with those who say to mount the Vortex Diamondback 4-12 x40 you have and give it a whirl for a while. You might decide you love it on that rifle, but if not, you'll have a better idea of what you do want.

started a new thread with a poll and parallax questions, down to 3 choices
Thanks for the inputs

It's down to $299.99 today with free shipping.

What one is down to 299 the viper?
Would the starting 6.5 power be to much at 75-100 yards

This one, I think they are on sale because the new models are 50mm.

I'm considering it for an AR that currently has a 3x9. I want more magnification on it and have other places for the 3x9.
I don't have any personal experience with Vortex.

It would not be too much power for me at that distance. It quite possibly could be at 15 yards. I've had a surprising number of very short distance shots over the years. My hunting circumstances could be totally different than yours though. If I had a dedicated prairie dog rifle or even occasionally hunted them then I'd want one scope in that power range.

thanks for all the input I ended up buying a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 on sale at lgs for $299 just couldn't pass it up
