Scope turret cap

I just lost a turret cap from an old weaver k3 while hunting. Is the purpose of this cap to keep out moisture? I can't find another that will fit and I'm looking for alternative ways of sealing it until I can find a replacement.

Dust & first barrier mosture Sealing, and inadvertent zero adjustments.

Cover it with black electrical tape until you find something better.

That's exactly what I did and thanks for the confirmation. The tape will also help keep the other cap secure as these are the uncommon Weaver caps which do not have many threads. They were tight when I last checked them. Oh well, back in business.
