Scope wanted need suggestion

Looking for a new scope. I want a 4-10 or 4-12 X40 with illuminated reticle. I want a fine crosshair for a reticle and dont want bigger than 44mm objective. I have a Truglo 4-16 X 50 and it is OK glass, not great and too big for hunting. I have a Vortex Viper 3-9 but the reticle is a .76 MOA dot and takes a lot of concentration for target shooting. It is going on a hunting rifle and I sometimes stay out late to shoot hogs. New or even used and if someo0ne has something to sell I am interested. Prefer not to break the bank and I usually spend around $100-$200 for scopes, havent really seen a big ROI spending more but I am afraid I might have to to get what I am looking for.

Illuminated crosshairs usually aren't the thinnest out there. Not an illuminated model out there worth owning in the sub-$200 range.

The cheapest I would personally consider is the Leupold VXR series.

A good quality 3-9X40 scope with a standard duplex reticle will give you all the magnification you need to kill deer farther away than you can shoot them. As long as you buy quality, it will let enough light through to see deer long before and long after legal shooting time. Illuminated reticles are most helpful when shooting at night, after legal hunting hours have neded.

You can spend more, or less, but a Leupold VX-2 is where I'd start my search. A VX-3 or Zeiss Conquest are more expensive and better, but the VX-2's will do the job for less money.

You can pay less, and go with a Vortex, Nikon, or Burris at around $200 and have a very good scope. I cannot think of anything where the MSRP is much under $200 that I'd suggest. Some of the $150 scopes aren't bad, but the $200 scopes aren't that much more expensive, and well worth the difference. Drop below the $150 mark and you are throwing your money away.

Huntign hogs at night is legal in Texas. A black reticle on a black hog in the dark doesnt work.

You most certainly don't need that much power for hog hunting at night.
I can assure you it will not work in your favor for several reasons.
Not the least of which is you won't be able to see anything through it at night.

It is a dual pupose scope/gun. Deer during deer season and hogs at night. I have a 4-16 X 50 and it works great at night at any magnification. I use feeder lights after dark and Laser Genetics for when the hogs arent at the feeder. Failing that I use a 1M candle power hand held.

Thanks JSimmons for the heads up on Muelller. Looks like they use the illuminated dot and those dots cover up a lot of target.

Ive done alot of night hunting shots ranged from 10yds out to over 200 (1.5m cp and a car battery in a back pack can be a wondeful....if heavy thing). I did fine with a standard duplex 3-9x40, but if your looking at a lighted reticle id spend the extra few hundred and get some thing decent. Especialy if you plan on looking thru it for any lenght of time, cheap ones have poor brightness adjustment and usually have horrible bleed over.

There's a 2-7x version of the Leupold VX-R that would probably fit your needs in terms of adequate magnification for deer, low enough for hogs, an illuminated dot at the center, fine crosshairs, quality, etc. That and the closeout prices on Burris Euro Diamond e-dot models are probably the lowest price illuminated scopes I can recommend. There's also a Burris MTAC 1.5-6x40 with illumination, but the VX-R will have better glass for about $50 more.
