I'm probably going to buy a new muzzle loader Friday and really don't have extra money for another Nikon so I was laying here thinking take the Nikon 3-9-40 off the 45-70 when shotgun season is done and put it on the ML than back on the 45-70. Any issues with doing this? Can constantly adjusting the scope break it?

It wastes ammo having to constantly re-zero.

You also take the risk of stripping mount screw threads with repeated assembly and disassembly

I have bought, sold and traded a lot of guns over the years. But tend to keep the scopes and some of them have been on multiple rifles. Use care and I don't think you'll break anything. But this should be considered a short term solution. When funds are available get another scope, you'll be a lot better off. The constant changing and re-zeroing is a pain.

FWIW, the 3-9X40 is way more scope than you need on either rifle. I'd be looking at something in the 1-4X range for those and find another rifle where the bigger scope is a better fit.

If your current rings line up with the muzzleloader mounts, as in you don't have to move them,

Remove scope from 45/70 and install on muzzleloader

Take a piece of blue tape and stick it to your box of ammo

Adjust/turn your dial and counts clicks all the way till it stops, write that number down on box, then return to original zero. You now know where to return the scope.

Shoot your BP and find it zero, (my wifes 44mag and my Mini 30 are the same zero) once you have found its zero, do the same tape and click counting.

18 or 20 inch pounds for your screws
