I have a Nikon BDC 3-9x40 on my 700 VLS and am interested to bump up the magnification a bit. I am not going to be shooting much farther than 300 yards, but am looking for something bright with good eye relief and positive clicks. Also a reticle that is easy to use and does not obscure the target. Budget $600 or less. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think it might be more than $600, but... maybe look around for a good deal on a nice used one. I have an "older" Leupold VX-III 4.5-14X on my .22-250 and it's a gorgeous scope. Comparable Leupolds are probably pretty pricey though. Check out Vortex? I compared a top-end Vortex to my Leupold Mark 4 and it compared pretty favorably - especially for the money! I know Vortex has some nice scopes in the $500 range.

I killed a coyote once at 517 yards with a 22-250.

It was wearing a K-6 Weaver scope at the time.

Don't over scope it.

You will miss more close shots then long ones with too much power!

mainecoon: I have had a HD Barreled Savage Bolt Gun in 22-250 for many years now and it is scarey accurate. I have had a 6-24X40 Bushnell 4200 Elite on it for the last several years and am extremly happy with it. I use this rifle to shoot PD`s, Ground Hogs, Rock Chucks, and Coyotes. And it works just fine for me and I also use a BI-Pod on this rifle.

A Vortex Viper 6.5-20 can be purchased in your price range; they have great glass and are a great value. I just mounted a 6.5-20 power scope on my recent purchase of a Cooper 22-250AI. Could not be happier.

If three hundred yards is the longest distance you'll be faced with I can't see the need of a variable scope with a max power of fourteen, sixteen at most. Vortex makes a 4-16 power that's economical and great glass.

Found it.. the Burris MTAC 4.5-14 x 40.
I expect you will be very happy with that Burris. I have 4 of the similar Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 (almost identical specs except that the MTAC is a 30-mm instead of a 1"). I bought a Burris, compared it very carefully and systematically to my two Sightron SII 6-24x42s and a Vortex Viper 6-5-20x44 (using an optical resolution target, grading the scopes on various criteria). I think all of these scopes are very good for the money, but at any given magnification level up to the 14x max of the Burris, the Burris is ever so slightly better. It's just a very pleasant scope to look through, great resolution and brightness, and somehow easy on the eyes. Immediately following this evaluation I went and bought 3 more of that same Burris model. It is a great scope to my eyes, and I prefer it to many scopes costing 2X as much.

I'd opt for a 4-12X with AO......at a minimum.
12 x is least I like for paper punching at 100 these days.

6-18X might be best on a hvy bbl rig.
4-12X on a walking varmint rifle.

Had a straight 10X AO Leupold on sporter .243 for chucks way back. It worked but close stuff, esp offhand was a bit nervy (still worked but took more "effort").

Wish I had that old CPC 10X again, would be great on my .22 target bbl pest rig.
