screwless 1911 grips

DSC00164-1.jpg

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. This set is the prototype.

I thought these might be used for photos. I don't know how they will work (or if they will work) on a pistol in actual use. I'll let you know once I have field tested them.

Opinions?

Thanks

My father in-law makes 1911 grips for a living, sells them on ebay.

He tried this about a year ago, they work good at first but beause its a compression fit with the wood over the grip screw bushings he found that changes in the humidity would make them fall off the frame.

You could try some sorta glue but would you really want to glue something to a gun?

Once upon a time, one John Moses Browning made bold to patent the silly idea of holding grips on an auto pistol with screws. But when Mr. B's pistols, made by Colt's Patent etc., made the big time, lots of companies decided to make auto pistols. But they all had a lot of problems figuring out just how to get around Mr. B's patents, and lo and behold they produced some marvelous mechanisms, including grips that were held on by clips and clamps and latches and notches instead of screws.

Those ideas are all available for the taking as the patents have long expired.

Yes that sounds good on paper but with out major mods to the frame the only one of those ways to attach grips that would work with out mods to the gun would be a clip like the cz52. Would you really want a clip around the back strap of the pistol?

IMHO they really just dont look right, now if you want something really cool do a set out of stone. Soap stone is as easy to work as wood, I have a set right infront of me that he did a few years back.

I think the coolest grips are grips made out of unusual materials, we tried in vain last year to get some human bones to make grips out of. Its not that we could not get the bones, you can ge them on ebay... We just could not locate a set of hip bones that were the right thickness, shape, or condition to get a set of blanks from. I tested the market and it was about 50/50 with people saying "COOL" or "you are a sicko"

A local wood worker I know actually did a set of spade grips out of sections of bone for a M2HB, after the work was done he found out that the bones were sections of a human leg bone, he thought they were from something like a deer or a cow at the time and did not wear a mask when he was workin them.:barf:
