I'm not normally one to pass on rumors, but this I found interesting... I overheard an owner of the LGS today tell a customer that they just received info that the TSA is buying as much .22 LR as they can and blaming the shortage of 22 on production being moved over to 9mm. I asked for a source. He said, "Just wait a day or so. This is going to blow wide open."

Well, I'll wait, knowing the nature of rumors, but I'm curious if anyone else has heard this one.

Well, that part at least is total BS.

No manufacture I am aware of even makes RF ammo in the same plants where they make 9mm ammo or any other centerfire ammo.

And certainly not using the same machinery.
Totally different production process & equipment.

.22 RF / all ammo production is at least as good as it has ever been, and most companies have reported they are at max capacity running 24-7, 7 days a week.

Here is a pretty good read on it.

IMO: The shortage is being caused by hoarders & price speculators like my friend.

He drags his wife out of bed at 5:00 AM every Sunday morning to stand in line at Wal-Mart with 25 other people.
And buy everything they allow them to buy as they are stocking the shelves.

He already has a storage building & his car trunk full of ammo he doesn't even have guns in that caliber for.

Why?
He resells it in newspaper adds & at gun shows for twice what he paid for it at Wallyworld.

Well this is no different than the 200 other similar rumors that have been on the internet for the last few months. The shortage is really simple. People are buying ammo faster than the ammo makers can make it. The government is buying no more ammo now than at previous times.

Things seem to be returning to normal.

Which is why Walmart is a major reason this BS still continues. If they raised their prices, even temporarily, to "market price", then those who do that would be out of business, supply would catch up with demand, and things could then come down to normalcy again

Sorry, but Walmart isn't to blame. Its all the MORONS who are paying those inflated prices for a box of .22LR that are to blame. As soon as people stop paying 2-3X the retail cost for ammo, the prices and availability will return to normal.

While I don't believe that rumor, I question whether they manufactures are running at full capacity, or should I say that the LGS/box stores are getting much supply. When I ask LGS or box stores why they don't have 22lr, they typically say that they are not getting any in. Rarely hear that we had some in and people came in early and bought it all up.

And, all the stores have 223 & 9 mm in stock due to 1 or 3 box limits, but not 22LR. And the online stores have most all calibers, but no 22LR.

I enjoy shooting 22LR and it is fun but I consider it be the least important so it odd that it is out. I don't even think most of the guns sold during the latest gun rush were 22s. Those seemed to always stay in stock. Anyway, just my opinions and input.

some of the wives I know if their husbands had them get out of bed at 5:00 am to stand in a line at wally world there would probably be somebody getting shot and no witnesses

According to the rumor?

To keep you and I from getting any of it!

Omama back-door gun control.

Last week Cabela's in Charleston had aproximately 200 boxes of 22LR on the shelves and it had been there for at least 6 hours when I saw it. They also had .223 for under $18 a box and plenty of pistol ammo. Either everybody must have ran out out of money or supply is starting to exceed demand here in this part of WV. I managed to pick up 4 boxes of Hornady 55 gr. V-Max bullets (left 4 on the shelf) and 2 boxes of Nosler 130 gr. BT's. The only thing I have not found locally in the past 2 months are Sierra 6mm 10 gr. Game Kings. Other than this, things are good for now locally.

Oh, good grief! Please stop. It actually hurts to roll my eyes that far back in my head.

I think the TSA sells pills you can buy to help with eye roll pain.

So the TSA is responsible for all the .22 missing?

Why don't people even bother posting reasonable rumors? If you are going to post something you haven't verified, at least try to post something reasonable, LOL.

Well, I did state up front it was a rumor, and my motive for posting was curiosity.....
