Sears & Roebuck firearms

A female friend has a Sears lever action carbine with the word "Ranger" ( model ? ) and a patent date of 1915...but doesn't know the caliber. I've been to Google and the FaqFarm and found some info...like manufacturers such as Stevens, Savage, Marlin, and a little known company by the name of Meriden made firearms with the Sears name on them. Can anyone provide a source of information that would identify the firearms that Sears sold, or any info on the Ranger series of firearms...meanwhile, I'll be looking at the firearm for caliber and serial number...thanks in advance...

There is a Store Brand cross-over list in the back of the Blue Book. Without a Model #, the closest guess I could make would be Marlin. They seem to be the only lever guns listed under "Ranger". What chambering is it in?
A picture would help.

The best, and the one most other sources merely reprint is the cross reference list at Gun Parts Corporation.

Look on the right side of the home screen for the cross reference.

While not totally complete, it is the best.

Keep in mind that Sears often sold the gun under the "Sears" name, the "Ranger" name, and the J.C. Higgins name.
So, although YOUR gun may have the "Ranger" name on it, it may be listed under one of the other.

There are only a few companies that have made CENTREFIRE LEVER RIFLES since 1915 , SAVAGE 99, MARLIN 336, MOSSBERG AND WINCHESTER 94 all come to mind, BUT THEY ALL HAVE A DISTICTIVE APPEARANCE, example: if it looks like a Marlin thats who made it. Winchester marketed a version of their MODEL 94 and called it a RANGER. Some place on the barrel near the back end there should be a stamp with the calibre.

WOW...She was way off...

turns out the "rifle" is a double-barrel sxs shotgun chambered for 2 3/4 inch 12 guage shells. It has a double trigger and the word Ranger on it...no serial number...other words found include: proof tested & patent April 20th, 1915. No reference to Sears at all...I have checked out the cross references provide by forum members here, but 12 guage is not listed.
Anybody have any idea where to go next...Thanks in advance

"...any idea where to go next..." Yep. To the lady's house with a digital camera and photograph the shotgun and every mark on it. Under the forestock on the barrels. Plus a picture of the whole thing. Both sides. Then you'll need to upload the pictures to a server that's on-line and post the URL. Talk to your ISP first. There are places where you can upload to if you don't get web space with your ISP. Don't ask me where though.
You may get web space with your account.It's amazing how many people here can tell you stuff about a firearm just from pictures.

Just FWIW, "Ranger" is one of those names that keeps turning up in the gun business. I can mention, just off the top of my head, a single barrel shotgun, a double shotgun, a series of rifles and shotguns made for Sears, a SA revolver, a semi-custom rifle and an auto pistol, all with the name "Ranger" and made by companies totally unconnected to one another. The Sears "Ranger" series includes guns made by H&R, Marlin, Savage-Stevens, Fulton, and Winchester. Not to mention several makes of BB and air guns.

Sort of makes "what is it?" questions tough to answer some times.

But my guess would be to check out Crescent Arms...I was researching a shotgun for a friend and found lots of info...It appears that, in that era, they were making shotguns for about 100 different companies, that put their names on the shotguns...Some will have some Crescent Arms markings, somewhere, some won't.

"RANGER" NAME ALL OVER THE PLACE...

INTERESTING! Go to the online gun auctions and put the word Ranger in their search engine. One such site had 7 different "Ranger" guns offered. Another site had the similar reaction to the word. Below are pictures of a marked .22rf single-shot rifle and a Sears "Browning Design" shotgun. There were also knives, crossbows, shotshells, and a number of other "Ranger" marked items offered. Winchester seemed to outnumber all others with their "Ranger" Mdl 94 in 30/30.
