Second handgun advice

I am looking at purchasing a second handgun for more frequent carry. I have a Sig P220 Elite Stainless, and really don't care to have it on my hip while tramping through the woods at my mothers farm.

My price range is in the $500ish. Have been shopping around, handling, and checking internet. Every time I come around I end up with the Glock 19.
I keep hoping I would like the new Springfield XDS, but was never that impressed with their other series.

I guess the other trade offs would be, do I go to a 9mm as well as the 45 I currently own, or should I find a comparable 45 for every day carry that I'm not going to worry about scratching on a tree lol.

There really isn't a range nearby me that I can rent from, to try anything out, so have to just make up my mind =/

I would strongly urge you to ask some friends who have guns to bring them out for you to shoot ... at a range, in the woods, wherever it's safe. (Be sure to supply the ammo, and clean them when you are done, and thank them.) Try as many as you possibly can. Choosing a new firearm from a shopping list off the internet, even from a forum like this one, isn't likely to provide you with the right fit for your hand and eye unless you get lucky.
 
I wish that was really an option. Only have a couple friends who are into firearms at all. They're either 1911 or revolver people as well, neither of which I am interested in.

I used to own a M&P40 full size. Shot well enough with it, just did not enjoy the round.
I have owned a Ruger P95 9mm, that I gave to my father.

I guess my main concern is going to end up, does it make sense for me to have two pistols (discounting my wifes' .22) that are in two different calibers.
 
Any .45ACP is going to be rather bulky for carry, I suppose if it's for farm and woods carry you don't care about concealment though. If it's for plinking and varmints, with a secondary role of protecting you from human-sized and smaller predators then a full or midsize 9mm will be more comfortable to carry.
 
The dual purposes would be home defense, so rail for light. And then carry when at the farm. Guess should've put in the first post that for a daily around town carry I plan on picking up either a pocket 9 or a .380.

Basically depending on my choice with this handgun. If I get a second 45, I will get a pocket .380 like the Ruger LCP. If I get the glock, I'd pick up the LC9 or something similar.
 
How about the Ruger SR9 or SR9c? I have a SR9 full size and can say nothing but good about it. Accurate, reliable in over a thousand rounds of different type, comfortable to shoot and carry on a daily basis, and what I think is one of the best buys around. Well within your price range and having multiple calibers really ain't as bad as it sounds. I have a 9mm, a .380, a .40 and a .357mag/38s. I just keep each ammo separate from the other, or in their own marked box, and all is good with the world.

Oh yeah, the SR9c or SR40c is also great for double duty due to the different mag. capacities.
 
In my experience and I would say this applies to most, you will shoot your guns at paper trying to get proficient with it ALOT more than it will be deployed. 9mm is cheap to shoot. You will have more fun shooting alot of 9 than half of the trigger time with all 45s. Dont get me wrong I love my 45 but I wouldnt be without my 9s either.

The Glock 19 is a great carry pistol without a doubt, but the Ruger SR9c is even better in my humble opinion.

BTW, don't let the magazine safety scare you away.
It is easily removed in less than 5 minutes.
 
+1 more for the sr9c. just got one not too long ago and it really is one dang fine pistol. VERY easy to shoot, handles recoil very well, and IMHO, it is just about the perfect size for a carry gun.
 
I do not have any local ranges that rent. All are outside help yourself. Only one within 30 minutes allows pistol use to begin with.

I feel like I'm using this to talk myself through something, and kind of feel bad... hopefully guys don't mind :p

Looking at S&W M&P 45compact, seems to be roughly the same size as the glock19. I've shot the M&P 40 fullsize, enjoyed the grip and can shoot well with it. Just didn't enjoy the 40. So kind of torn between those two at the moment.

The Ruger kind of has a sore spot with me since I did not enjoy the P95 at all. Why I'm considering their pocket pistol for later I'm not even sure.

Would be a great choice.

If you want something smaller, think Glock 26. If you want something not just smaller but also thinner (and more expensive! :eek:) think Walther PPS. Love mine. :cool::evil:

But what ever it is, HURRY UP AND BUY IT ALREADY...

So you can start agonizing about your third gun. :)
 
might want to try a Surplus CZ 83 in 380 acp. Nice easy guns to carry, and easy on the Wallet. You could get into one, upgrade the grips and get a spare Magazine for less than $300.00 even with the Transfer fee and shipping

The SR9c is worlds different from the P95.


I also had a P95, and traded it away.
I didn't like the decocker/safety, nor the trigger, nor the grip, nor the magazine release.
 
It seems like you are pretty sold on staying with .45, and your only problem with the M&P 40 was the caliber, so....
 
I have two Glock 19s, a Gen3 and a Gen4. The Gen3 has been my daughter's carry piece since 2001 and the Gen4 I bought about six months ago. Both have been flawless. Hard to imagine a better choice than a G19. That's especially true if your purchasing is limited somehow and you need that acquisition to be a good choice with little chance of drawback. A G19 is always a safe bet in my book.
 
Went to one of the big sport outlet stores. They had the M&P 45c, Ruger SR9C and Glock 19 so was able to at least handle each. Back to the Glock, and my local shop has a Gen4 he just got in. So he be holding for me and I shall be able to pick up once I go pay and wait 2 days =D

Then will be onto what to fill my pocket with come summertime
 
i have the m&p 45c and have to say it is a very fine firearm, probably my favorite handgun for the moment.
 
New here and checking out the site. If you liked the M&P 40 but didn't like the round(I'm assuming the .40) then why not just get a(Storm Lake) 9mm barrel and magazines?
Just a thought.
 
I had already sold the M&P 40. Was the full size versus the compact. Couldn't justify having multiple calibers for two full size handguns. As much as I would love to keep buying more n more, I have too many other expensive hobbies to satisfy =D

Even tho I was set on Glock two days ago, I once again go on the fight with myself over is it worth dealing with two different calibers =/ Considering I'll shoot them the same amount either way
