Oh, I agree. This is the High Road. I was giving an opinion, and not defensively. As to confrontational, someone else started talking about what "many don't realize," and about urine in the corn flakes. There's no reason to be confrontational or defensive.
I would have added "similar bullet geometry" to those conditions, which I consider different than bullet construction. Meplat shape, length-to-caliber ratio, and angular moment will effect how quicky (and if) a bullet tumbles, and that affects penetration. One could try to calculate that all out on paper--and we'd get an absolutely terrific theoretical results--which I guess will be enough for some folks to use to choose a bear load.Given similar bullet construction and similar velocities, yes the 180gr .357 will penetrate deeper.
However, most 10mm 200gr FMJs are likely different in bullet construction, geometry, and velocity than most 180 gr 357 hardcasts, so I'd actually prefer to see animal or gel results before deciding one penetrates better than the other--or even that either penetrates "enough." Just me.
